Two days after a grand jury cleared two Richmond County sheriff's deputies in December's fatal shooting of suspect Justin Elmore, his family issued a statement critical of police actions and the news media.

In a letter delivered to The Chronicle this morning, Mr. Elmore's mother, Dora Ward, said the sheriff's office "abused their authority, and the media portrayed false information to justify the murder of my son."

Dora, you should be so

Dora, you should be so embarrassed by his behavior over the last few years that you would be ashamed to lay claim as the mother responsible for producing a male human like him. Note: he wasn't a man.

I feel in any situation they should not shoot to kill but shoot to stop (like in the arm, sholder, foot). Columbia County shot a freind of mine because she was going to commit suicide she pointed the gun at them and they killed her. I do not trust cops. The actions of the cops is wrong alot of times and that is why the public fears them.

its time to just get over it.

its time to just get over it. the police were doing there job by getting the drugs and guns off the streets. They were also getting the drug dealer off the streets also. He should have never use his SUV as a weapon, he should have just gotting out and turn his self over to them and this may not have even happen. Good work for the police in this case.

Now where was his mother when

Now where was his mother when her son was getting into all his trouble? Who did she critisize for the lack of parenting the years he was getting into trouble? Her son was not murdered - he chose to committ suicide by his actions of aggression against men that were authorized to uphold the law. I feel very sorry for this lady - she lost a son - but she should be the one that is critical of her lack of parenting as this child was growing up. I hope she finds peace.

airline employee --- your

airline employee --- your friend was unstable and wanting to take her own life then decides to point a loaded gun at police officers..... think about what you said and put yourself in their shoes -- they like me also enjoy coming home to see the family and if anyone pointed a gun at me I too would shoot to kill ...you people are out of touch with reality....and to think they let you people vote.

This never had to happen. Why

This never had to happen. Why did the Police not use non-lethal weapons. I had serviced in the Army and I can tell you that there are stun rays, and freeze rays used by special ops. What do not the police have these things?

I truly hate that such a good example to kids and a pillar of our community was killed while trying to elude the police. What is this world coming to when the police try to protect themselves from people like him?

Non lethal weapons??? Elmore

Non lethal weapons??? Elmore used an SUV. It doen't get much more lethal than that. Do you actually believe that you should fight an SUV with s stun gun? Tasers don't go through windshields, but 40 caliber Fedral Hydrashok bullets do. Bottom line, if you don't run from the police, bad things probably won't happen.

Freeze rays. HA HA.

Freeze rays. HA HA. DAHOODFELLA, What SF unit did you service? My parents loved me, but they also knew when I was old enough to sign my own death warrent. My dad always said, if you go to jail don't call me to bail you out. It's mothers like Elmore's that are the root of the problem. Them and the absent father they made the baby with. Why is it there are so many men in their 20s, 30s, and 40s living with their mothers and all they do is sit on the porch all day smokin and drinkin with their buddies? If I didn't have a job or go to college my butt would be out the door.

Nice letter. Why do parents

Nice letter. Why do parents of criminals always believe that everyone is doing it, but are allowed to go free for having money, being white, or their social status? Get real, not everyone is doing it, and not all are going free for having money. Also, if your grandson was told to do something by the police and refused he is wrong. He could've done what they told him to do then filed a complaint against them. He was cuffed and beaten for, most likely, running his smart mouth. Sometimes these junior thugs need to be shown who's boss, even if you have to use the grey area.

I am certain Mrs. Ward is

I am certain Mrs. Ward is grieving the loss of her son. But I would not accuse her of doing a bad job of parenting. Prisons are full of people who came from good families. It's the criminal who goes wrong. My sympathies go to Mrs. Ward, but she does have to consider the facts. Her son already had a record with law enforcement, he knew the consequences of his actions. Not stopping and submitting to requests of the officers was his undoing. I am sure if he had complied with the officers, he would not have been mistreated in any way. He would probably still be in jail, but his basic needs would be taken care of. Mrs. Ward, don't play to the sympathies of those who are of the same mindset you are. All you will do is to continue to promote strife and turmoil.

Airline Employee you are a true idiot. I bet if someone points a gun at you or your kids you would shoot to kill not to stop. This isn't television. Shooting someone in the arm, leg, of foot (lol) does not stop that person from killing. It only [filtered word] them off. Just like you and many others don't trust the police, FYI NEWSFLASH... We don't trust you either. Thats why we do what we do. Take this dollar and go buy a clue. Freakin Nut Case.

there should be citizen input

there should be citizen input into these "investigations" that are conducted.the police police themselves ?
shooting this man to death was over the top.clearly to the average citizen, there were a number of choices to be made, and frankly the dudes made the wrong one.had he run, where was he going to go ???i can assure you there were enough "trained " officers there to have pined him in.....

My condolences to you, MS.

My condolences to you, MS. Ward, for the loss of your son, but it does not excuse what he did. If he was innocent why did he flee? He put just as many residents of Cherry Tree in danger with his irratic behavior as the Officers that shot him. An innocnet child witnessed the episode and agreed with what the tapes showed. Airline- what an asinine statement about your suicidal friend- she pointed a gun and the cop! Did you think he was going to let her get the first shot off? Your son was a menance to society. He had no regard for authority and all of this could have been avoided if he would have just stopped as he was instructed to do. The cops are hired to protect the citizens at all cost but not at the cost of their own lives.

drumbeater, had he run he may have killed another motorist. Just like the other young fellow who ran from the police. Then everyone criticized them for chasing him. Lose-Lose for the Police to try to please all of you. Also, what training do average citizens have in investigating police procedure? You seem to know so much about it. Do you mind revealing your qualifications?

Drumbeat- who do think sits

Drumbeat- who do think sits on the grand jury- regular citizens. These are the ones who saw the tape and declared the officers were in the right. For the officers to wait to see if was going to run was taking a chance on their own safety. Anyone viewing the tapes could see his windows were tinted darker than allowed by law. He could have had gun in the SUV. Lets face it- there is a small group of people in Augusta that will be never be satisfied with the works of the cops. Why- because the cops are trying ensure the law is being kept. As long as people continue to engage in illegal acts, people are going to get arrested and unfortunatly killed. If Elmore would have had a job and been a law abiding citizen, he may still be alive today. Instead he chose a life of crime and ended up dead. A lot can be learned from death- be accountable for your actions.

I give up trying to reason

I give up trying to reason with idiots. Hence the reason why they are idiots can not reason with them. He was a career criminal. Had a rap sheet a mile long and yet some of you condone what this man has done. Gezzz folks wake up and smell the damn rose's here people. It is plan and simple he has broken the law. He was asked to stop he didnt. By running like that he put others at risk at getting killed by him from the SUV he was driving. He played with the big boys he couldn't keep up now he is paying the ultra meant price DEATH

Sorry about the death of your

Sorry about the death of your son but he thought he was above the law. He was "running 100 miles and hour in the wrong direction", so did you or any family member ever try to stop him? Perhaps some other members of your family can learn from this. Why not start with the young man who said he was a relative and was drunk and yelling to the tv cameras. Take him to an AA meeting.

they based their deciscion on carefully prsented, carefully worded , carefully scripted "evidence"...."wise ole man" indeed.
and no, i do not agree with "chases" either....apparently we need to put more instuction into tactics and strategy and less time trying to play law and order.

I think instead of harping on

I think instead of harping on what was right or wrong in the death of her son that Ms. Ward should now make sure that his soon to be FOUR children do not grow up and follow in their father's foot steps. I would love to know what becomes of these children eighteen years from now. Will they be graduates from HS preparing for college or selling drugs on the same streets as their father? Make a difference in their lives because they are still here and now need family more than ever.

I am sorry for MS Ward's loss

I am sorry for MS Ward's loss and Mr Elmore's children but she is throwing the word "murder" around very easily. Also, I don't think a "few misdimeanors" is correct. Mr Elmore did have a lenghtly record, both felony and misdemeanor. No one really knows what was going on in his mind but I would think he was not a "First Offender" anymore and finally was going to be facing some time if not just for running. I am sorry to say his history, no matter anyway you coat it is going to look bad . He may not have deserved to die but he made ALL of his decisions. He looked bad on his own. Not his color, where he lived, or his family.

i agree with scooby...just

i agree with scooby...just let it rest and move on seriously...i mean although the overall situation is crazy and they may feel as if it could have been handled differently...the fact is the police went to trial and were cleared and that's just it....there's nuthing else focus on his kids and make sure that they have guidance and become a positive influence in there lives rather than living ur life fighting and crap all the time. it's time out for all dat and focus on the kids. to cont to pursue other ways to stay in the media is crazy. fall back and get your life back together and move forward and maybe start a foundation against drugs and weapons and use mr. elmore's death an example. it may hurt the way i put it but we all must eventually move on and not carry hatred on our hearts.
