Area letter carriers will participate in the nationwide Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday.

People are asked to leave non-perishable foods in a sturdy bag next to their mailbox prior to their regular mail delivery time. Suggested food items include canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, and cereal.

Food collected in the Augusta-Aiken area will go to the Golden Harvest Food Bank. Last year, the food bank received 72,012 pounds of food from the drive, said Carrie Jones, events and food drive coordinator.

People may also drop off non-perishable items at any area post office Saturday, she said.

For more information, contact Golden Harvest Food Bank at (706) 736-1199 or visit www.helpstampouthunger.com.
