GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Rev. Vernon C. King, a nephew of Martin Luther King Jr., and a former pastor at an Augusta church, has died. He was 48.

The King family said in a statement Saturday that Vernon C. King died suddenly a day earlier in Greensboro, N.C. The family did not say how he died.

The Rev. King was the youngest son of Martin Luther King Jr.'s only brother, A.D. King Sr. He was a graduate of Morehouse College and he was the pastor of several churches in Georgia and North Carolina.

He was currently senior pastor of St. James Baptist Church in Greensboro. He was a former pastor at Spirit Creek Baptist Church on Dixon Airline Road, according to Dorothy Nero, wife of the church's current pastor, the Rev. Glasper Nero, Jr.

The Rev. King served on the boards of the King Center and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference board of directors, an organization his uncle helped found.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

There is local interest

There is local interest because Rev. King used to pastor a church here in Augusta; I think it was Spirit Creek. I met him and he was a nice person. It's too bad that he has passed at such a young age. Some of you ignorant people on this forum need to get a life.

Then why not mention his

Then why not mention his local connection to Augusta? That might warrant a news story, depending on how active he was in the community. People die all the time in Augusta, they don't get news stories published. So he was a relative of Martin Luther King. There are lots of relatives of famous ppl who die all the time who don't get news stories published upon their deaths.

Looks like the man has done

Looks like the man has done some things on his own. Maybe having the same last name hurt him as much as it helped him. Anyway, RIP.

Good God, hillguy, learn to

Good God, hillguy, learn to read. The article stated Rev. King was formerly a pastor in Augusta. Your posts shows your stupidity.
And, Cparker, please don't lump me in with hillguy (with your statement white folks are unbelievable), I'm white, but the similarities to hillguy stop there. he's a total idiot.
