Phinizy Swamp park will open new section this morning

Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy will open a new section of its William Bartram Rain Garden boardwalk this morning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park off Lock and Dam Road.

A guided “Swamp Saturday” hike will follow at 9:30 a.m.

Located just beyond the Academy’s campus, the rain garden serves as an example of an upper coastal plain swamp and showcases flora and fauna as seen by naturalist William Bartram during his travels through the area.

The Rain Garden boardwalk also provides a living laboratory for students to safely explore swamp ecology in a supervised context.

The newest section of the boardwalk was made possible through a $25,000 materials grant from Lowe’s and a matching donation from the Augusta Utilities Department, which provided $25,000 in labor.

A photo of the new section just might help out the Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy by encouraging people to participate. Beautiful place to visit.
