An early morning traffic accident in Aiken County was caused by a heart attack, the coroner says.

In a news release, Coroner Tim Carlton said Michael Jones, 61, was traveling north on Hitchcock Parkway in Aiken about 6:45 a.m. when he suffered cardiac arrest, crossed the southbound lane, left the roadway and went about 100 feet into the woods.

He was driving a 1997 Lincoln Towncar. His wife was a passenger in the vehicle and received non-life-threatening injuries.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash, the coroner said.
