Officials have since determined the device had already been exploded and posed no safety risk. Aiken County Sheriffs Office officials and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded about 1:30 p.m. to the area of Burnett Street and Carline Street, near S.C. Highway 421. There had been a report of someone finding the grenade while cleaning out a shed in preparation for a garage sale.
The homeowner told authorities she knew about the grenade, but those helping her prepare for the sale didnt and notified police. Authorities cleared the area by about 3:00 p.m., said sheriffs Capt. Troy Elwell.
