An Augusta woman is in stable condition after she was shot Monday night while trying to defend her fiancé’s brother from his ex-wife.

Betty Moss, 60, was hit at close range by shotgun fire during an argument at a home at 1717 Brown Road, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Rogers.

Police said Alice Fulmer, 54, had come to the home to harm her former husband, Tracy Fulmer. In a scuffle, Mr. Fulmer’s brother grabbed the gun from the suspect as Ms. Moss jumped between the victim and the gun.

The suspect fired, striking Ms. Moss once, Sgt. Rogers said. Ms. Fulmer, who police said was intoxicated at the time, fled the scene then wrecked her Chevy Blazer in a nearby yard. She is currently under observation at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for injuries she suffered during the wreck, Sgt. Rogers said.

She is facing charges of aggravated assault, DUI, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and driving with a suspended license.
