ASU alert interest may spike following incident at UGA

More members of the Augusta State University community are expected to sign up for its emergency alert system in wake of the triple murder in Athens connected to the University of Georgia.

Jasper Cooke, ASU’s director of public safety, hasn’t viewed the numbers today, but said it is typical for the numbers enrolled in the university’s Jaguar Alert Emergency Notification System to spike after a prominent school-related crime, especially one so close.

The alert system has been in place for more than a year, but hasn’t had to be used, he said. The system allows anyone with an Augusta State e-mail address to opt in for the emergency alerts, which can be sent to multiple e-mail addresses and phone numbers for each person who signs up.

To opt in, students, faculty and staff should go to www.aug.edu.
