NEW YORK -- It's official.

The Detroit Lions selected Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft on Saturday.

The Lions, who are coming off the first 0-16 season in NFL histroy, agreed to a $78 million, six-year contract with Georgia quarterback late Friday.

Nine of the last 12 top overall picks have been quarterbacks.
