Death penalty sought in Parsons slaying

Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against a Columbia County mother and son accused of fatally beating a Grovetown woman.

District Attorney Ashley Wright confirmed this afternoon that her office filed a notice of intent with Superior Court to seek the death penalty against Rebecca Sears, 41, and her 20-year-old son Christopher Bowers.

Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers were indicted by a Columbia County grand jury Wednesday for the murder of 41-year-old Laverne “Kay” Parsons. They also were indicted for armed robbery and burglary.

“It’s appropriate to file it soon after the indictment,” said Mrs. Sears’ lawyer Victor Hawk, whose brother Jacque is defending Mr. Bowers.

The indictment charges Mrs. Sears, of 227 Hot Springs Drive, and Mr. Bowers, of the 4000 block of Briarwood Drive, Martinez, with fatally beating Mrs. Parsons, Mrs. Sears’ next-door neighbor, with a bat and claw hammer.

It also stated that the mother and son stole a gold necklace and a watch from Mrs. Parsons’ home at 229 Hot Springs Drive.

Assistant District Attorney Philip Catalano called Mrs. Sears the “mastermind” behind the murderous plan during an April 16 bond hearing and that she instructed Mr. Bowers to fatally beat Mrs. Parsons with a claw hammer.

Mr. Hawk said a death penalty notice won’t change his defense strategy, but it does increase the stakes.

“We look forward to seeing some discovery to see where all this is coming from,” he said.

The discovery phase of the trial likely will start following an arraignment hearing, which Mr. Hawk said he expects to take place in the next two to three weeks.

let me see.....i guess she is

let me see.....i guess she is not guilty, it was a case of mistaken identity. your typical "scumbag" lawyer, he will not start telling lies all for the sake of getting these two wastes of space set free when he knows they "butchered" that poor woman. why not save the taxpayers the time and the expense and the family the emotional trama and plead her guilty and if she is put to death then so be it......

I hope son turns against mom.

I hope son turns against mom. But yet still give him the full punishment allowed by law. Wish I could be there when they throw the switch on her.

The "mastermind" never get
Unpublished

The "mastermind" never get successfully prosecuted because it stems from circumstances. Both will not get the death penalty so why make the charge? This could be a mistake.

jisomjr...so he's a scumbag

jisomjr...so he's a scumbag because he's defending his client? You understand that people have a right to a lawyer and a right to defense, right? Just the same way that you have a right to free speech to say stupid things like you just wrote.

hey reality, un fully

hey reality, un fully understand under our constitution they are entitled to a vigerous defense....but let me ask you are the innocent??? is ther doubt as to whether or not they killed the woman???? i always thought if you plead not guilty you are indeed not guilty...not using the not guilty plea as a ploy to negotiate for a lighter sentence...i don't know if you are aware it is done all the time, whereas the defense atty, will use the cost of the trial and the burden that will cause on the taxpaying citizens by having a long drawn out trial, the the defense will use that to get a lighter sentence...let me ask you reality would you want a lighter sentence if it was your family that was butchered??? what would say to the families of the people brian nichols shot and killed??? or better yet how would you feel if by some technicality thses 2 were acquitted even though the eveidence clearly showed they killed that woman???..i don't feel that exercising my rights under the constitution to voice MY opinion is wrong...why don't he just plead them guilty????? instead of having them plead NOT GUILTY, tell me reality based on the little evidence that is out there what are not guilty of????

by the way reality....he is

by the way reality....he is not required to accept the case becasue he is not a public defender, he is defending them for a fee, so tell me reality is he defending them because he actually BELIEVES HIS CLIENTS ARE GUILTY OR IS IT FOR TME MONEY AND THE PLUBICITY THIS TRIAL WILL BRING. and if he believes they are innocent i have yet to see him on the news telling everyone that the evidence will prove his clients did not commit the crime(s) they were charged with. lets just hope you never suffer the loss that woman's family did and now deal with the possibility of having to sit thru a trial and the pictures of the murder scene and pictures of the victim

There is too much the press

There is too much the press has not touched upon with the husbands. Has anyone asked Parsons' husband the last time he had sex with Sears or talked with her and what it was about? You could also ask if Sears's husband had talked to her or the SON about the affair. I'd like to see these questions asked even if they refuse to answer? The indictments are set and it is only Sears and her son?

jisomjr...so, to be

jisomjr...so, to be clear...you are only to take a case for a fee (and try it) if you think the client is innocent? That said, I honestly don't have a clue if they killed that lady or not. I assume they did, but how the heck would I know? Now, though, if the Hawks plead their clients guilty, their clients would get the death penalty or life without parole. So, honestly, what is the benefit of that when there is always a snowball's chance of winning a trial? The client decides how to plead, fyi, not the attorney.

realitycheck this is not

realitycheck this is not completely accurate. The lawyer explains what will happen when a client pleads one way or the other and based on this information a decision is reached by the client. So no, the client doesn't solely make this decision. Plea bargains should not be allowed in the process. 9 times out of 10 it allows really bad people to get lighter sentences.

It is always about the money

It is always about the money and notoriety. And if you think someone having an affair is justifiable cause to beat someone to death you need to be beaten to death for your stupidity.
