High temperatures in the Augusta area are expected to reach 90 degrees by 5 p.m. today, just shy of the record, weather officials in Columbia said this morning.

The local record high for this date was set in 1923 at 93 degrees.

A spokesman at the National Weather Service said he does not expect today’s high to surpass the record.
