Former Greenbrier basketball player Eric Marshall

Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said results on former Greenbrier High star Eric Marshall will not be available for several weeks

Mr. Marshall, the man set to be Greenbrier High School’s assistant basketball coach next year, collapsed and died late Wednesday while playing at the Warren Road Gym.

A 2003 Greenbrier graduate considered one of the all-time best basketball players from Columbia County, Mr. Marshall was 24.

He was playing basketball when he collapsed around 7 p.m., said the coroner.

He was taken to Doctors Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., Mr. McDonald said.

“I’m just stunned,” said Greenbrier Athletic Director Garrett Black, who coached Mr. Marshall in his senior season in which he averaged 28 points per game.

“He was a great basketball player, but he was a unique kid,” Mr. Black said. “He was a great role model.”

Mr. Marshall played two years for Greenbrier, and both years was named the county’s Player of the Year by The Columbia County News-Times. In 2003, Mr. Marshall was named The Augusta Chronicle’s Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

He landed a scholarship to play at Wofford College, but his playing time was hampered by knee injuries. He graduated with a business degree and was working to receive credentials as an educator to work at Greenbrier, Mr. Black said.

“We were kind of grooming him. He wanted to get in the education field,” Mr. Black said. “He would have been super.”

Standard procedure on a death like that. GBI does it, not the hospital. Sad news, a young life gone.

This is happening too much.

This is happening too much. We need to ban Basketball and other sports that increase our cardio. Where's the outrage? How many more lives will be lost before we stop this evil. Honestly, though, Sad story indeed. We need positive educators like himself.

My prayers go to the Marshall

My prayers go to the Marshall family. Eric has a special place in the Taylor Family heart. Not only was he an outstanding athlete, he was one searching to find peace with his spiritual nature. He mentored his namesake, Eric Taylor, II, slept on my floor and ate with us. If young people wanted to see a role model, they only had to look to Eric to see the best. It is sad that the good die young, however, I believe he is definitely a Saint in the next dimension. What glory, to pass from this life to the next doing what you like. Eric will be missed but never forgotten.
Pastor Eric Taylor, Sr.

andywarhol...so just sit on your butt and let that kill you? What a ridiculous statement for you to say (to ban basketball??). He chose to play basketball because thats what he enjoyed doing. My thoughts & prayers go out to Eric's family...I went to GHS with him also. We lost such an awesome person...

Very tragic news. I would hope that the family calls in an outside expert. There is something that does not seem right about this case. I\A very healthy man just drops dead? I don't think that the community is going to buy that one.

This is A True Tragedy, God's

This is A True Tragedy, God's Comfort to Mr. Marshall's family. All public gathering places and recreation facilities need Automatic External Defibrillators. One might have made the difference in this story. Urge your community leaders and politicians to "make it so". Make it "Marshall's Law" to commemorate the life of this fine young man. It's the least a proud community can do.

So sad and even when we

So sad and even when we exerecise and do the right things we may have problems that many times can only be detected by NAET methods. We all know eating out is a hazard to our health but we have to be concerned about the food on the shelves at the store. It only takes one nutirient that you aren't absorbing or one item your body is having a reaction to and over time you can have a serious problem. Pray over and bless your food as usually we don't know it's real source or problems it might contain. May be family be healed and held by our Lord and savior Jesus Christ during this time.
