Woman, son indicted in fatal beating

  • Follow Latest News

A Columbia County grand jury indicted today a Columbia County mother and son accused of killing a Grovetown woman.

Rebecca Sears, 41, and Christopher Bowers, 20, were indicted murder, armed robbery and burglary by the grand jury.

They are accused of fatally beating and stealing from 41-year-old Laverne “Kay” Parsons, Mrs. Sears’ next-door neighbor in the Orchard Hill subdivision off Columbia Road.

The indictment charges Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers with beating Mrs. Parsons to death with a bat and claw hammer.

During a bond hearing last week, Assistant District Attorney Philip Catalano called Mrs. Sears the “mastermind” behind the murder and said it was Mr. Bowers who fatally beat Mrs. Parsons with a claw hammer.

Victor Hawk, Mrs. Sears’ attorney, recently said that a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 29 for Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers likely would be cancelled should they be indicted. A phone message left Wednesday afternoon for Mr. Hawk was not immediately returned.

This is a gruesome story. I

This is a gruesome story. I mean really how can anybody use a claw hammer and bat to beat somebody that bad. They are animals!! All that is to it. They deserve the same treatment that Mrs. Parsons died from. Take them out to a field and have people pay to swing a bat at them. Like you would do to an old junked car.

The time and effort to defend

The time and effort to defend these alleged humans should equal the amount of time Kay was allowed to defend herself, before the hammer quite literally came down upon her! In a case this clear, we need an express lane to the big dirt nap; Kay certainly didn't get her day in court, her years of appeals. May God have mercy on their alleged souls. My dog has more morality!

Regardless of how anyone

Regardless of how anyone feels, these two people are still innocent until a judge or jury finds otherwise. Comments such as those above are the things that actually help the defense in a case such as this. It can be shown that they will not be able to get a fair trial in this area and can be moved to a much more liberal part of the state. I sure would hate to be in front of an Augusta jury, because some of you really don't have the sense to sit on a fence post much less a jury.

I think they should release

I think they should release them both. Announce when, transport them to an empty field, turn them loose, and let the public give them their punishment. Sure would save us taxpayers alot of money.

Swampghost, it's not that we don't have any sense as you say, apparently some folks feel very strongly about such a gruesome death and justifiably so.
