Seventh-grader Matthew Bishop asked the Richmond County school board today to reconsider the name of Pine Hill Middle School.

Before the new school opens in August, Matthew, 13, wants the board to rename it for Gilda J. Martin, his aunt. She was 6 when an explosion killed her at a Hephzibah school in 1953.

I don't get it. Is there

I don't get it. Is there more to this story or did Greg Gelpi just need to call some sort of story in from the school board meeting to meet his quota in order to get his check this week? I mean, it's a sweet gesture on this kid's part...I guess.

Well I think it's a great idea to name the school after this young girl! Why would you have a problem with the name of the school being changed? I mean come on they named it pine hill. People need to have a heart these days and sit back and think if this was there family!

Hello I am trying to get the

Hello I am trying to get the school changed. My mission Is to change the new middle school Pine Hill Middle to Gilda J. Martin in Honor of this young 6 year old child that was tragically taken from us while attending recess outside the Gym at Hephzibah Jr. High, Elementary School in 1953.

In the eyes of the kids

The water heater has been leaking gas for days now and today is now November 19, 1953. It’s about to be ten O’clock now and four young boys are going down into the basement while the 1st. Graders are going out for recess. Gilda is sitting on the school steps with her friend Sandra when a teacher tells them to go play. Now Gilda notices someone she wants to speak to so she walks in a different direction than Sandra. That’s when two of the young boys started smoking and the explosion occurs and young Gilda has been crushed. The pupils in the basement have 1st and 2nd degree burns and little Sarah had received a broken leg.

Why would we want to change

Why would we want to change Pine Hill Middle’s name?
Gilda did not make it to middle school and had no chance to succeed in life. This is the main reason I feel that we should change Pine Hill Middle, because Richmond County believes that all their students should succeed. I believe that this will tell the pupils that not everybody has the chance to go on, so they should be thankful for the opportunity that they have in life. Its been almost 56 years since this tragic event impacted so many lives in our local community lets promote this little girl to the next grade and school and this will give a new meaning to furthering our children’s education in Gilda J. Martin Middle (Located Augusta, Richmond County)

It Has Been 56 years and still nothing has been done please help so we can change this school to Gilda J. Martin Middle

Ok first of all, the posting

Ok first of all, the posting above does not sound like a 12/ 13 year old wrote it. I am sorry but my wife teaches 9th graders and I have seen how they write stuff. Secondly, just like everything else in Disgusta, you will not get the school renamed because you are not part of the political circle of friends, i.e. Doug Barnard, the Flemings, the Blanchards, etc. Unless you contribute a couple million to the political careers of our distinguished RCBOE board politicians, you will never get this approved.
