Man arrested in Sunday robbery

An Augusta man was arrested Sunday morning and charged in the armed robbery of the Family Dollar at 1801 Central Ave.

According to Richmond County sheriff’s investigator Cory Carlyle, Michael Johnathan Hope, 22, took an unknown amount of money from the store at about 10:50 a.m. He was arrested by officers behind the Paine College gymnasium at about 11:15 a.m.

Investigator Carlyle said Mr. Hope was not a Paine College student.

He was charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was also charged with theft by receiving in connection with the possession of a stolen firearm.
