Mr. Miller, anchor of WSM-TV in Nashville, Tenn., was walking back from the Partridge Inn to where he was staying on Heard Avenue when he apparently suffered a heart attack, according to his childhood friend, Bob Smith, meteorologist at WRDW-TV in North Augusta.

Mr. Miller was in Augusta this week to attend the Masters Tournament .

He returned frequently to the town he loved. He served in 2007 as host for the anniversary celebration of the world premiere in Augusta of the movie The Three Faces of Eve. The observances benefited the Miller Theater, where the movie had premiered in 1957. The theater was built by Mr. Miller's great uncle Frank Miller .

Mr. Miller had worked at WSM since 1969, and was a friend of many Grand Ole Opry stars. He was a pallbearer for the funeral of Eddy Arnold last May .

For several years, he served as host for the talk show Miller & Company on The Nashville Network, and also worked a stint as a news anchor at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles

He also wrote a popular blog on the WSM-TV Web site, Dan Miller's Notebook, and frequently wrote about his early years in Augusta and his return visits.

After the screening of The Three Faces of Eve in 2007, he wrote a friend in Augusta, "I simply cannot express how much I enjoyed being included in the festivities there in Augusta. Getting reconnected with so many people, and meeting other Augustans who I never knew before, was something that will be on the 'highlight reel' of my life ."

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Karen, four children and three grandchildren.

We in Middle Tennessee are

We in Middle Tennessee are saddened to hear of Dan's death. He was a great anchorman and well loved and respected here in Nashville. He reported in a straightforward fashion and could be counted on to deliver the news as it was, without putting his own spin on it. That's a rarity in the news world today. Thank you Augusta for allowing all of us in Nashille and Middle Tennessee the opportunity to invite your native son into our homes and hearts. We will miss him dearly and will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.
