Monday night holdups show brazen bandit, police say

South Carolina law enforcement officials are investigating three armed robberies that occurred in a matter of minutes about 10:30 Monday night.

Two occurred in the city of North Augusta and the third was outside the city limits in Aiken County, but all occurred within a five-mile area along U.S. Highway 25, Capt. Troy Elwell of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said.

The same man is suspected in all three robberies. The gun-wielding man held up a Circle K, Kangaroo Express and Four Seasons convenience store.

“You don’t see this very often,” Capt. Elwell said of the brazen nature of a criminal striking so often in such a short time.

Monday night’s incidents are part of a recent spike in armed robberies, he said. Additional law enforcement officers have been assigned to investigate the incidents. The armed robberies aren’t believed to be connected to the downturn in the economy.

“They were thugs before the economy. They will be thugs after the economy,” Capt. Elwell said.
