Casey led by one entering the 72nd hole before a bogey landed him in the playoff with Holmes, who shot 3-under-par 69 to finish at 11-under, then had to wait for the final outcome.
At the time Holmes finished, Fred Couples held a one-shot lead, but he bogeyed his final three holes to fall out of contention.
Casey shot even-par 72 and had two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine.
