Rebecca Bowers Sears, 41, and her son, Christopher Sean Bowers, 19, were charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the death of a 41-year-old Laverne Katherine Parsons.

Mrs. Parsons, of 229 Hot Springs Drive, was found beaten in her home Wednesday morning.

Ms. Sears, of 227 Hot Springs Drive, and Mr. Bowers, of 4086 Briarwood Drive, Martinez, were arrested Friday just before midnight, said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

“The past 72 hours have been busy, yet very productive,” he said Saturday morning.

Authorities believed Mrs. Parsons was attacked at her home in Orchard Hill subdivision at about 9 a.m. Wednesday after she returned home from dropping off her son at school.

Capt. Morris said search warrants were executed at the residences of Ms. Sears, Mrs. Parsons and Mr. Bowers. Ms. Sears’ Infiniti also was seized by police, he said.

Police also obtained a search warrant for Healing Hands Physical Therapy Center on Highland Avenue, where Ms. Sears works. Ms. Parsons had worked in the Thomson location of the therapy center, according to the company’s Web site, which was taken down Friday.

Ms. Sears was shot in the leg Thursday night outside her workplace, according to Richmond County police.

Police initially thought Mrs. Parsons walked in on a burglary at her home. Deputies found her lying on a garage floor next to a baseball bat and claw hammer, the weapons used to attack her, said Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison.

A Friday autopsy revealed that Mrs. Parsons died of blunt force trauma to the head, Mrs. Garrison said.

A contractor who arrived to work at the home Wednesday called police to report glass from a French door at the rear of the home had been shattered.

When deputies arrived at Mrs. Parsons’ home Wednesday, Ms. Sears and her sons also were present, according to a police report. However, the report did not specify the names of the sons.

Ms. Sears initially followed a deputy as he first entered her home, but was escorted back out when the deputy saw blood on a couch and living room rug, according to the report. The deputy also said he found blood on the walls and floor.

On the same day as the break-in at Mrs. Parsons’ home, Ms. Sears reported that her home was burglarized. She told police that she left her house at 6:50 a.m. to take her children to school, according to an incident report. At about 8:35 a.m., Ms. Sears said she returned home after her son, Michael Bowers, called her because the front door was open.

When police arrived to the scene, they noted in a report that the house had been ransacked, but found no signs of forced entry. Police did not provide a list of missing items.

Capt. Morris said Saturday that he could not further discuss details of the case, including a possible motive for the homicide.

“It’s not prudent for us to discuss details surrounding these developments,” he said. “You will learn exactly what happened and why at the appropriate time. Today is not the appropriate time.”

Capt. Morris said he doesn’t expect any more arrests to be made.

“Having said that, this is an ongoing investigation, and we never say never,” he said.

Ms. Sears and Mr. Bowers are being held at the Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

Wow the chronicle is one the

Wow the chronicle is one the most racist papers in the world. Im a white man and you have to be kidding me. I can't speculate on the case. By saying it might be a affair. I mean Ms. Sears is being charged with conspiracy. Not just the son who did the killing. Which means both are in on the murder. Why would a woman get her son to kill her neighbor. To get money for drugs when Ms. Sears is employed and gets a check from work. Ms. Sears would also be able to get money from her husband. To delete my comment shows how racist this paper is. Look at the comments on the Hephzibah teen. And he is a 13 year old kid. Your paper didn't delete one speculative comment. Nor do you ever when its not white ppl. These are grown adults not kids. The 19 year old is over 18 which makes him a man. Why don't you care when its not white people? Huh Billy Morris?

For God's sake people - stop all this ugly nonsense and speculations, go watch a murder mystery on TV and leave this terribly sad situation alone!!! I am in agreement with all those posters that expressed their sympathy, sadness and thanks. The rest of you folks, go hang your head in shame and offer an apology.

Good job to the Columbia

Good job to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Captain Steve Morris, the many fine men and women within the division and the Richmond County Sheriff's Offfice for their assistance. These people, upon conviction, should loose their right to ever be a part of our society again. Doesn't matter where they lived, what they look like, etc. as they are nothigh but violent thugs who have no value of life and therefore don't deserve to live.

Most of you people are

Most of you people are friggin idiots speculating what happened. What if it was your family and you were reading your comments. How would it make you feel? All that is KNOWN right now is that a lady lost her life after coming home from taking her son to school while her husband was in CA on a business trip. The next door neighbors reported a burglary at their residence and then the neighbor reported getting "shot" at her place of employment. Then the neighbor and her son were arrested for murder. The rest WILL COME OUT when it is appropriate to do so. I certainly hope that those of you that have speculated wrongdoing by Ms. Parsons apologize publicly to the family on this forum should your speculation turn out to be false.

People of any race, any

People of any race, any gender, and from any address has to acknowledge immorality for the serious sin it is. Far to many whites in Augusta feel comfortable making blacks the leading candidates for violent crimes & drug use. A white woman, living in a predominate white neighborhood is just as capable of such crimes as the very blacks that are stereotyped for them. I am not going to attack the Parson family, but I feel whites went to far attacking the Rhodes family after the death of their 13 y/o son. I have always said that "Immorality has no race, gender, or address". This could happen to anyone. You are all fools to believe immorality is intended for blacks. Whites commit murder, abuse drugs, and even use section 8. It is foolish to insult people for being black, only to realize white are drug using murders too. I don't want to sound insensitive, but the truth is a subborn thing because it will not change for anyone of us. Again I say, "Immorality has no race, gender, or address". May God bless everyone of us to trust in his truth and not according to what we have made socially acceptable to believe.

Whatever the reason-- this

Whatever the reason-- this was a senseless murder and Mr. Parson and his son need our prayers in their time of grief. Let's let the police department find out exactly what happened before all the speculations. God Bless you Mr.Parson and son. SusieQ

the augusta chronicle is a great newspaper. im sick of all of the white liberals being so happy that this wasnt done by a distant relative of their messiah from kenya. im sure since the guy was white this will be HUGE instead of just being swept under the rug like things usually are.

WOW! Both mom and son look

WOW! Both mom and son look like crack heads. Or maybe their eyes are just puffy from crying. Yeah, right! Did the son shoot the mother in the leg when leaving work to try and cover up the story and confuse things? Still a lot of missing pieces to this story! Thank God (and CCSO) they were caught!

cparker, when did any report

cparker, when did any report or comment speculate that this crime was committed by a black person? Murder and immorality are universal. And, as you've proven, so is racism.

Cleamson, that story makes me sooo mad. I want to do the honors of putting each one of those [filtered word]'s down, they deserve to be tortured in the worst ways possible. That's not all the details in the article either its much worse. I can't help but to cry when I think of it.

i figured they had to be

i figured they had to be white by the location of the house. the "section 8 people" could not have done something like that in broad daylight without anyone seeing them. but these idiots shouldnt be rejoicing because of the fact. the "section 8 people" commit all kinds of murders and rapes every day. im not happy the women is dead i am just calmed down because it wasnt some random thing done by "the section 8 people".

Big pat on the back to

Big pat on the back to everyone involved in investigating this horrific crime as well as many others! I know from personal experience how much time away from families these deputies, investigators, etc spend in pursuit of justice. Thanks for the "blue line" you all place between law-abiding, hard-working folks and the criminals who would destroy us. And for those of you who always think the worst of law enforcement professionals, well...they will still answer the call to duty, even for you. God bless!

Craig Spinks, I could not

Craig Spinks, I could not agree with you more. I am so proud of all of the deputies and investigators on the RCSD and the CCSO for all the hard work they have had too do in order to make the arrests so quickly. This proves once again what professionals we have working for us on a daily basis. Thank each one of you that was involved in any part of this investigation. Now we need to let them finish their work and we will know answers later. s for Ron Burke, I hope he spends a long lifetime in jail thinking about how many people he hurt with his pathetic actions. I hope there is some "justice" for him one day. He truly came face to face with an angel, then killed her. He is a pathetic escuse to be called a human being! My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Parson's family.

well it is a very sad

well it is a very sad situation . moms covering for the spolied rotton kid , I feel sure columbia county is full of moms like this and spoiled kids like this one. columbia county has tried to keep things like this from happening, but the bigger and more the county grows the more things like this will be seen. until parents everywhere make kids be more responsible for their actions, cut off the alcohol buying for minors partys and the friends house, it will continue. IF the schools and parents would put as much time and effort in to raising their kids to be respectful and teach them some morals as the do in sports activites these kind of problems wouldn't be happening in perfect little columbia county
