A Columbia County woman severely beaten during a Wednesday burglary died this afternoon.

Police confirmed the death of Laverne Katherine Parsons, 41, and said they will now pursue her death as a homicide.

Head trauma is the official cause of death, but an autopsy will probably be conducted Friday at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta, according to Coroner Vernon Collins.

Mrs. Parsons was probably attacked with a baseball bat or claw hammer in her home Wednesday morning after returning home from taking her son to school.

In a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report released this morning, deputies said they found her lying on the garage floor of her Orchard Hill subdivision home off Columbia Road.

Deputies noted that a bat and claw hammer were on the floor near Mrs. Parsons.

Deputies who first arrived at the house at 229 Hot Springs Drive, thought it to be the scene of a break-in with no one home.

Then they found a trail of blood that led to the garage and Mrs. Parsons, said sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Deputies were called to the scene Wedneday by a workman who was supposed to do some repairs at the house. He told police he found the glass of the home’s French doors shattered and authorities were notified.

When a deputy first entered the home, he found what appeared to be blood on the sofa and living room rug, according to the police report. Deputies also found blood on the walls and doors of the two-story brick home.

Authorities believe Mrs. Parsons interrupted a burglary in progress when she returned home about 9 a.m. after taking her children to school.

“She was confronted by the suspect and was attacked and was seriously injured,” Capt. Morris said Wednesday.

The home next door, at 227 Hot Springs Drive, also was burglarized, Capt. Morris said.

Area residents have been warned, he said, and are being asked to notify police if they saw anything suspicious this morning, Capt. Morris said.

Anyone with information concerning the attack or burglaries should call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 541-2800.

My prayers are with Mrs. Parsons. I hope they catch the low-life cowardice [filtered word]before he gets somebody else. To bad he does not get caught by an armed homeowner willing to put his lights out permanently.

I just bought a 38 and applied for a permit to carry. It was a very easy process. It only took a week to process my permit. I am a woman, and decided not to feel threatened by thugs who will kill you over nothing. I feel much safer. Husbands and boyfriends, please encourage your wives and girlfriends to do the same.

There have been several

There have been several crimes in CC that have not been reported in the media. Because of fear it will hurt the county's image and slow down housing sales. Same thing with the weapons, fights, and drugs found in CC school's. The county doesn't want to release info. Because they don't want to hurt the county's school image. This was not the first burglary in that area. I live in Martinez. And the leaders in CC should be to blame. Making the residents of CC feel like everything is okay. When crimes are being committed right under there noses.

If you look at the crime

If you look at the crime reports for areas on Columbia rd. Those with a Martinez and Grovetown address. You will see this is not the first incident. I hear it was a Evans middle or Evans high student who beat Ms. Parsons with a bat. If it was a Evans high student. That wouldn't be a shocker. Evans has changed for the worst in the last couple of years. Its now on par with Grovetown and Harlem high.

dellguy1 - Does that rule out Greenbriar or Lakeside? When is the last time a felon was arrested from the student body at Evans? Answer the same question about the other two schools...

Dellguy -- the latest crime

Dellguy -- the latest crime info reported by the GBI is 2007. In 2007, there were 27 reported robberies in ColCo. That's an average of 2 per month.

I think any crime in an area that is typically considered a safe area should be a "shocker." Evans remains one of the statistically safest places to live in the state.

An act of violence like this can happen anywhere because of one person filled with hate. Shame on you for making an incorrect generalization about the students of an entire school. A school is made up of people, and the population of a school changes daily.

dellguy1, people have been

dellguy1, people have been spewing that same BS since I was in high school in CC 30 years ago. The only reason that this burglary was in the paper is because the homeowner was attacked. It has nothing to do with public image of CC and some big coverup conspiracy. The victim apparently had no idea that someone was in her home when she returned, and I sincerely hope that she recovers and they catch the little piece of garbage that hurt her. For those that suggest shooting, I'm all for being armed, but what are you going to do...start going in your front door sideways, weapon drawn..peering around corners, busting out in a shooting stance and blasting at anything that moves (God help your family cat or dog)? If you're home and someone breaks in, you should do whatever is necessary to protect yourself and your family. If you come home and you think someone has broken in, do the smart thing...call the police and wait outside before going in. Even if you're wrong and no one is in there, better safe than sorry.

A speedy recovery to Mrs.

A speedy recovery to Mrs. Parsons is my prayer also. Crime is everywhere, even in "pristine" Columbia County. I was shocked to learn recently there have been burglaries even in the quiet cul de sac where I reside. My eyes have been opened and we've formed a crime watch. Love and protect thy neighbors folks, we're all in this together.
