One of the area's grocery store chains will stay open as it reorganizes its debt in bankruptcy court.

Bi-Lo filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today in South Carolina federal court.

Its chief executive said the 215-store grocery chain has a $100 million financing commitment from GE Capital to use to operate while the court proceedings play out.

“Throughout this process, our doors will remain open and our commitment to our customers will not change," said Michael Byars, president and CEO of Bi-Lo.

The company is three days away from a loan coming due and has been unable to refinance, it said in a statement.

"In a normal credit environment we would have expected to refinance the maturing term loan on reasonable terms in the ordinary course of business," Mr. Byars said. "Unfortunately, the current credit environment is very challenging."

Bi-Lo expects its customer policies and programs, including its Bonuscard and associated promotions, returns/exchanges and other special promotions, to continue without interruption.

It has nine stores in the area.

An employee at the Pine Log Road Bi-Lo in Aiken, who wouldn’t give his name, said operations would remain unchanged.

South Carolina Bureau Chief Preston Sparks contributed to this story.

chatter90210: you are exactly right on. I used to be a vendor in BILO and they stink. I hope they have to go belly up and they all have to go the unemployment line. I certainly will never spend another dime there, and as long as there is a WalMart, no one else should either.

I'm with chatter. I never really like bi-lo anyway so I don't mind if it goes bankrupt. Then again, I have the privilege of shopping at the commissary.

Denmark and PoDunk towns like

Denmark and PoDunk towns like it are screwed up because of the people that live there not because a grocery store closed up. C'mon Williston put down your socialist hat for once and hold people accountable for their actions instead of looking for someone to blame and a handout.

I'm not a loyal Bi-Lo

I'm not a loyal Bi-Lo customer but I do frequent the Belvedere store because it is close to my work. I still have to drive to Jacksonville to get Winn-Dixie brand items like Chek Cola and steak seasoning. I was brought up on Winn-Dixie brands and always stock up when I'm down there. Bi-Lo hasn't been the same since they took the cows off the roof and did away with the butcher shop. I remember when the Bi-Lo was in North Augusta behind Krystals and the butchers would roam the aisles with blood all over their uniforms that was cool in a freaky way but back then if someone was roaming around with blood all over them it meant they were a butcher now they are suspects.
Wal-Mart=China and if you want to support our future Government just keep supporting the chinese and mexicans they will be our butchers soon.

Wegman's from the northeast

Wegman's from the northeast needs to open here. They are so fabulous that all of the other grocery stores would be closing for lack of customers!

BiLo savings card! CVS

BiLo savings card! CVS pharmacy does that card crap. I avoid them at all costs. You would think retailers would catch on as to what customers dislike. Or at least take a lesson from WMT.

We ALWAYS shop Publix. They

We ALWAYS shop Publix. They have very competitive prices, great quality and everything we need. The employees are also friendly and helpful......There is also NO "savings card" to get their deals. Many items are BOGO which makes for excellent savings. I do not use ANY store cards. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I just don't think they need to track every item I buy and when and when and where I do buy. I too sold products to Bi-Lo in Mauldin, SC through their parent company years ago and there were very easy to deal with and paid their bills on time, every time.

To the people who complain

To the people who complain about them tracking you with their "savings" cards, why do you give your real info? If it bothers you so much remember they do not ask for ID to get the card. I have a post office box that I opened years ago for everything like that. It ends having to sort through junk mail to get to the mail I really want/need to receive. I go about once a month and throw all the junk away. Since a lot of companies are now using cards like this now I may have to get a bigger post office box and a new batch of assumed names!!!

For all the card conspiracy

For all the card conspiracy folks: Just tell them you don't have one. Someone will ley you swipe theirs or fill out a new application out with a fake name and address. Just be careful the black helicopters don't follow you home. My only complaint with Bi-Lo is that, unless you hit it the first day of the sale, they run out of the items. I'd still rather shop anywhere than WalMart. I guess when they put everyone else out of business and are free to raise prices at will,we won't have a choice.

It is time for BILO to taste

It is time for BILO to taste some of their own self indulged indecency they have been handing out to vendors the last several years. You can not mistreat decent people who are just trying to make a living. BILO's problem is that they want to blame their problems on everyone else. They need some competition like Ingle's to put the final knot in the bow for them.

One more question: If a

One more question: If a company files Chapter 11 bankruptcy , how do they obtain a 100 million dollar line of credit to use during the gbankruptcy proceedings? If BILO cannot pay their current loan that is coming due, how will they be able to repay 100 milliion when it comes due? Something doesn't smell right here!
