Gov. Sanford makes bid to use stimulus money for school debt

  • Follow Latest News

COLUMBIA — Rebuffed once, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is making a second bid to use $700 million in federal stimulus cash for debt payments — but this time for school construction.

This morning's request by the governor to the White House comes a day after the Obama administration told Mr. Sanford the cash is intended to spare jobs and educate children.

The administration denied permission to use the money to pay down other state obligations.

Mr. Sanford's new request seeks approval to use federal cash to repay $577 million in school bonds. He says the cash would free up millions in debt payments. The rest would be used to repay other debt.

Mr. Sanford's letter reiterates criticism of Democrats for airing ads in South Carolina slamming the governor for his stimulus plans.

The stimulus payment is meant

The stimulus payment is meant to help the folks that are hurting and a lot of the hurt is due to Gov. Sanford's poor governing...If he had done a better job he would not have to even consider paying his debt with this money. I agree with potaters that Gov Sanford is a weasell and SC does deserve better. There are people who need unemployment to help them live day to day until they can find a job. Help them Gov Sanford..do something good for your people!!

Nice try Governor! You don't

Nice try Governor! You don't know how to run your state and you expect the Federal Government to bail you out! You should be working for AIG! The guys who fired on Fort Sumter are probably rolling around in their graves. If I were the President, I would not give you a nickel. Whoever votes for you next time is twice as dumb as they were before.

Wow, apparently not many

Wow, apparently not many governors ran their state very well, they are all begging for money to help pay for welfare and entitlements.

Go Sanford, keep doing what you are doing. You have lots of support.

Thank you for trying Gov.

Thank you for trying Gov. Sanford. Some people believe that money grows on trees in Washington D.C. The "taxpayer" in the state appreicate what our Governor is doing! In this economy, it makes sense to pay down debt.

To brownskin30434: do you

To brownskin30434: do you honestly believe what comes out of your presidents mouth? he has done nothing but lie since he took office. what your president has not told you is all of the conditions that come with accepting this money. so why don't you contact your president and see if he can explain it to you. Gov. Sanford has made the conditions of this money an issue and he is being told that he will use it for the presidents purpose or he will not receive it. this money will do nothing to save jobs or help the economy. do you even watch the news? we'll see how people like you feel in 2 years.

ummm...every state has debt

ummm...every state has debt moron. they are not asking for federal money to pay the debt, but since it's being offered that's what he wants to use it for. what part of that is not registering in your liberal minds? i know you morons like to spend (i'm sorry...borrow from countries like China) $$ like it's water, but reality must set in at some point. geeez!! have i said it's going to be a long 4 years yet?

Who are you calling a moron?

Who are you calling a moron? You are a retard(My 2nd). Stop watching Fox news dummy. Stupid people like you want Pres. Obama not to lend money so that there will be a chain reaction of banks failing, companies failing, and worst than depression era unemployment rates. Just say you want him to fail. By the way, it was the overwhelming White votes that put Pres. Obama in office. There aren't enough Blacks to put a Senator in office let alone a President. Think about it. So everytime you and the rest of your dummy pals talk about deadbeats and welfare checks: just forget about. You dummies are going to believe what you want.

South Carolina deserves

South Carolina deserves Sanford and his economic ways. Paying off debt will help the state more than anything else. More stimulus for more social programs is just stupid and Sanford should stick to his guns and refuse the socialist strings. If he can't get the money to pay down education debt, then South Carolina will be better off without the money.

magic - i never said anything

magic - i never said anything about "black" votes MORON! you did.
if he had a plan that made any sense whatsoever, i would certainly support it MORON. but since he does not have a plan that will actually work and his own liberal zombies are beginning to agree with that, you may want to start watching some sort of news source to give you a clue MORON.
