Augusta attorney Victor Hawk said Brandon Wise, 24, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide.
District Attorney Ashley Wright confirmed the charges and also said Mr. Wise was charged with traveling too fast for conditions and having improper windshield tint, both misdemeanors.
Each charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
Mr. Wise struck Christian Giles, 24, in June with his Ford Expedition while traveling south on Mullikin Road in Evans.
Mrs. Giles, a kindergarten teacher at Augusta's John Milledge Elementary School, died from blunt force trauma to the head, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.
Mr. Wise's vehicle struck Mrs. Giles while she was walking on the shoulder of the road, her husband, Auburn Giles, told authorities. The site of the collision was near their home on Sawbuck Way.
Mr. Wise told police he didnt see Mrs. Giles until it was too late to avoid hitting her, said Columbia County sheriffs Capt. Steve Morris.
Since the incident, Columbia County officials have added a sidewalk to Mullikin Road and are planning to install street lights.
