Batesburg man identified as Aiken County fatal crash victim

A 52-year-old Batesburg, S.C., man died in a moped crash early today on U.S. Highway 1 in Aiken County.

Sylvester Morris died at scene of the crash near Batesburg, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

The wreck occurred just before 6 a.m. as Mr. Morris was driving a 2008 Yamaha moped northbound on Highway 1, Mr. Carlton said. Mr. Morris drove into the driver side door of a 1999 S-10 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Elizabeth Turner, also of Batesburg, Mr. Carlton said, adding that Ms. Turner was trying to turn left onto Highway 1 from Chinquapin Church Road when the collision occurred.

He said Mr. Morris was then struck by a northbound 2004 Volvo Bobtail tractor, driven by Lowell Holloway, of Leesville, SC. Mr. Carlton said it appears Ms. Turner failed to yield right of way, but South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. Ms. Turner and Mr. Holloway were not injured, he said.

One of those things would be very difficult to see a 6 a.m. There is hardly any light at that time of the morning.
