Jobless Georgians to get an extra $25 a week

  • Follow Latest News

ATLANTA - Georgia's labor department has begun sending an extra $25 a week to more than 180,000 jobless Georgians.

State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said Friday the department is sending the supplement to those with valid unemployment insurance claims.

The boost comes from an infusion in federal stimulus money and will bring the average weekly unemployment check in Georgia to $292. The maximum check will rise to $335.

Thurmond and Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a memorandum of agreement last month to accept the additional funds.

The extra federal money will be available to anyone filing a valid claim before Jan. 1, 2010 and will end July 3, 2010.

Income tax also will be temporarily suspended on the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits paid to each claimant.

I used to kind of chuckle at the talk of "an extra carton of cigs" and the like, but I'm now typing this from my desk on my last day of work. I'll file for unemployment on Monday. Those jokes aren't quite as funny anymore. I'd love to be a producer again some day soon.

Ya know what, folks? Just

Ya know what, folks? Just because you're unemployed and the gov't offers a hand-out, doesn't mean that you have to take it.

I can say this, because as I'm self-employed, I know what it's like to go for months without income. I still refuse to be a leech on the system and take hand-outs.

I was a victim of the Morris/Augusta Chronicle layoffs back in November, and you better believe that extra $25 will help some! Tjohns and Andy, I just hope you don't become one of the growing number of the unemployed in GA or SC! I can't count how many resumes and applications I've sent out...how many contacts I've shaken down for leads on another job. The folks that are recently out of work can't find any because no one is hiring. ESPECIALLY IN MY FIELD.
Every little bit helps!

These people earned this

These people earned this money. It is not a hand out. In order to receive unemployment, you had to be employed at one time. Dang!!!!

Why are they getting an

Why are they getting an additional $25 a week when the rest of the [still] working folk are only going to get an additional $8-13? Don't tell me it's because they aren't making as much on unemployment either - been there, done that, and I know how much expenses can actually drop when you're not working. Sure, you have to get creative with your finances, but when you're not bringing in the money you used to bring home then you learn exactly what you can and can't live without.

Your tax dollars at work.

Your tax dollars at work. Just how many of the unemployed have been so for years because of the ease of receiving a handout versus actually earning anything. Of course the unemployed are too proud to take a minimum wage job. Why should I flip burgers for a possible 280.00 per week when I can get 292.00 doing nothing?????

I still have to wonder why

I still have to wonder why the jobless are getting $25 more a week and the taxpayers are getting $13 more. Some of those taxpayers are employers, or were.

I've known unemployed people

I've known unemployed people in the recession post Carter. They didn't have to take jobs that paid them less than they were making when they got laid off. As long as the unemployment check and the spouse still working was enough to pay their bills, they turned down jobs offered and kept accepting the unemployment check. Unemployment works just like welfare. The intention is noble, but the rules make it possible for people not to take work that is offered to them.
