Augusta’s first installment of federal stimulus funds was announced today – a total $7.6 million, most of it in programs designed to help low-income and homeless people.

The money is coming through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., said in a news release. Most of it, $6.1 million, is going to the Augusta Housing Authority and will be used to finish renovating Peabody Apartments and to reroof Hall Powell Apartments, authority Executive Director Jake Oglesby said.

The rest of the money will go to the city’s Housing and Community Development Department – $927,319 from HUD’s Homeless Prevention Grant Program and $606,372 from the Community Development Block Grant program.

A spokeswoman for Dr. Broun said that while he opposed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 he’s trying to make sure his constituents get a fair share.

Why do people seem to think

Why do people seem to think that Obama is going to help to poor, poverty stricken, homeless, living in the projects, non-working, continuous breeders of the United States? Name one thing he, or his wife, have in common with them? He and his wife are educated, UPPER class, individuals who have never lived that type of life. So he came from a dysfunctional family ... so did most people of every class ... that does not make him your brother-in-arms! He is just like every single other smooth talking politician who says whatever has to be said to get elected and then delivers nothing promised. Did you REALLY believe he was the messiah and going to deliver you all out of the purgatory of your life to greener pastures? Get real! Once again people ... stop whining about how bad your life sucks and do something about it! You life sucks because YOU let it suck and no stimulus package on earth can change what your attitude about life gives you ... it gives you what you give it ... exactly what you deserve! NOTHING! Quit doing the same thing and expecting different results ... NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Yeah, I'm sure renovating

Yeah, I'm sure renovating public housing projects will certainly stimulate the economy. How about helping out small business owners who could help employ these ppl?

i don't have a problem with

i don't have a problem with tax dollars going to peabody, becuase residents in peabody are elderly and the more for them to make their remaining lives a bit more comfortable is what we as taxpayer owe them for the contributions they have made before us, but how much of the stimulus will be going to the other housing project(can anyone say cherrytree, olmstead, or underwood?), they should be closed down and august get out of the public housing business for thoes who are young and healthy and able to work, no matter how many babies there are

Wonder which roofing company

Wonder which roofing company in Augusta will have the pleasure of getting some of this taxpayer money.....I know of several senior citizens who live in older homes in and around the Augusta area that they have worked and paid for who also need some renovation work and a new roof.....

Has anyone asked themselves why the barry has pushed all of this crap down the taxpayers throats in such a hurry?? It's because the pelosi machine knows that the more intelligent voters in this country are going to finally wake up and kick this socialist out of the White House and the crap that he is backing will already be law....wake up you stupid ...stupid...sheep!!!

Wonder if the roofing company

Wonder if the roofing company will be employing illegals? So much for being a stimulus. Perhaps the housing projects need new roofs and renovations. No doubt they do because tenants don't always take the best of care of properties. But the stimulus for putting people back to work in all types of jobs where they have been lost is just not there in the Pelosi/Obama package.

No one, not one person in my

No one, not one person in my extended family or my husband's has ever lived in public housing or received public assistance. Am I lucky. Nope, there have been plenty of financial tragedies. It's the type of people we come from. My dad told his parents he wanted no inheritance from them. He said he would take care of his family.

I would think for that much

I would think for that much they could just rebuild altogether. I also think some of the money should be used to buy 100 Swans to put in the river. It would make it so elegant. And put sheds up every 100 feet at Riverwalk for the homeless to nap in. How awesome would that be? Very awesome. And why are their no clowns downtown selling balloons? That's a tragedy. We need clowns! There should be a clown who sells 100 balloons a day. They should invest some money in that too.

I certainly hope that someone will be taking a tally on how our inept officials spend this money. I'm sure that some of them would like to "tip" themselves for a job "welldone".

Wonder how hard it would be

Wonder how hard it would be to get taxpayers, you know, the real taxpayers, to make up oversight committees, as volunteers. Watchdogs, if you will. Our Chamber of Commerce has people who were/are business people who offer free business advice to Chamber members starting up new businesses. Oversight of how government agencies are spending the money is sorely needed. They could watch costs, whether bidding procedures are being adhered to. Augusta/Richmond County appears to be in great need of such oversight. And here we go turning lose stimulus money to them.

That this paper fails to tell

That this paper fails to tell is that our Mayor and city leaders failed to even apply for any fed. money. If you read the article you see that it was th U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (i.e. our former mayors organization) that gave Augusta the money.

"Augusta" is not getting

"Augusta" is not getting anything out of this stimulus.. unless you are living in public housing or are a career government bureaucrat.. so don't print a misleading headline insinuating "Augusta" will be benefitting from this stimulus. I fail to see how this spending will stimulate Augusta's economy. Making Augusta an even greater concentration of generational welfare dependency will not stimulate its economy, if anything, it will drag it down further. I don't have a problem with renovating the Peabody homes and helping the disabled and elderly, but don't call it a stimulus, because it will do nothing to stimulate the economy.

I fail to see where the

I fail to see where the "middle class" benefits from any part of the stimulus money received in Augusta.. it appears most of the money is being funneled to the hood rats of society... and in response to creating jobs... it will probably go to the same big name construction companies that do all the work and keep those with jobs employed, not creating new ones.

Give it one year and any and

Give it one year and any and all renovations will be torn all to hell. Hey coalminer, williston, gacopperhead, techlover and saber do you think you idiots could save the tax payers a few dollars and make repairs to the renovations in a few months. You want have to donate but about ten hrs. a day. Can you handle this for your fellow liberal jack[filtered word].

I see a lot of people don't

I see a lot of people don't quite agree with how the money is going to be spent and I too am having a hard time understanding some of it. I do think we should help those who need some help but come on. Lets think for a few minutes about the home owners who are struggling to get their mortgages paid every month. Like my family we make too much money for help from the government but with the economy like it is paying our mortgage is getting difficult. We haven't fallen behind but why not lower some property taxes and other things to accomodate for the rising costs along with the other proposed spending of that stimulus. I mean we all worked for it don't we deserve some of it too.
