Augustas first installment of federal stimulus funds was announced today a total $7.6 million, most of it in programs designed to help low-income and homeless people.
The money is coming through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., said in a news release. Most of it, $6.1 million, is going to the Augusta Housing Authority and will be used to finish renovating Peabody Apartments and to reroof Hall Powell Apartments, authority Executive Director Jake Oglesby said.
The rest of the money will go to the citys Housing and Community Development Department $927,319 from HUDs Homeless Prevention Grant Program and $606,372 from the Community Development Block Grant program.
A spokeswoman for Dr. Broun said that while he opposed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 hes trying to make sure his constituents get a fair share.
