A former Murphey Middle School pupil charged with stabbing his teacher and eventually causing her death was sentenced this morming to 20 years in prison.

David Drayton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced in Richmond County Superior Court by Judge Sheryl Jolly.

Mr. Drayton was 14 when he attacked teacher Linda Gail Hendrick in 1999.

Ms. Hendrick, 59, was found in a pool of blood at the school, where she taught special needs children, including Mr. Drayton.

Mr. Drayton was 14 at the time. Because of his age, he could not be prosecuted as an adult for aggravated battery. The charge against him was handled through the juvenile court system, and he was committed to a juvenile detention facility for the maximum possible, five years.

Ms. Hendrick remained in a coma from Nov. 22, 1999, until her death on May 31, 2007.

She had suffered about 70 stab wounds from a pair of scissors and a massive head injury in the restroom near her eighth-grade classroom.

I heard that a fellow who stabbed a guy 22 times got life. That was a meth head killing a meth head. This was a [filtered word]killing a fine person. I bet in 20 years, if he serves that long, he'll be healed and won't need the wheelchair anymore. Sounds like Overstreet is rubbing off on Jolly. Sprintman... if the boy is retarded then he should be at Gracewood, so the public can be safe....what a mope!

Sprintman.......Just because

Sprintman.......Just because he was in a "special needs" class does not mean he was mentally retarded. You can have a normal IQ and still be in a special needs class; he may have had a learning disability or a behavior disorder. Bottom line is he deserves to be put away for the rest of his life so no one ever has to worry about him again!

As in many cases. A mother who isn't married has a baby and the government and taxpayers have to clean up her mess.

Sprintman, those short buses

Sprintman, those short buses haul many of the problems we have in our schools these days. Gracewood is the proper place for those who have "special needs" and are mentally deficient.

The Bible states and eye for an eye. It does not say an eye for an eye unless you are retarded, then you are excused. He should die for what he did. He will be back to do this type of thing again, until then we will pay all of his bills.

Good thing this was before No Child Left Behind, today he might have an IEP that said, "student tends to stab things with scissors" and it would be written off as part of his modification.

This typifies the

This typifies the "mainstreaming" p.c. b.s. that people get spoon fed when they don't get involved in their community. The "special needs" are the children that will grow and support our community. NOT Dems like this "young man". Separate the wheat from the chaff.

This man should have been

This man should have been sentenced to die a long time ago. He stabbed the woman 70 times. He knew what he was doing after the first stab, Somewhere the first stab and the 70th stab, the anger had to wear off, so he was cognizant of what he was doing. This man can serve no useful purpose to society, so put him in the chair and hook him up.

Sprintbus take it from a

Sprintbus take it from a special education teacher who knows the facts. This person was not intellectually disable. He has a condition known as spina bifida which has no way of affecting his mental ability. He was moble enough to to do this savage attack. Also...for your information not every school has a classroom where students are all day long. Even the most severe students move around either for PE or adapted PE. Those students with SEVERE mental issues are located at one school however this was not case in this instance. Please know your facts.

Oh..and by the way

Oh..and by the way Patricathomas, "Ms. Know-it-all", this was not an example of mainstreaming. This person was in a special needs self-contained classroom. Please look up under IDEA, IDEIA, and PL-94-142 what 'mainstreaming' is.

sprintman: That "boy" is NOT

sprintman: That "boy" is NOT mentally incapacitated by mental illness OR retardation. He is PHYSICALLY DISABLED due to spina bifida. which has nothing to do with his ability to think. His vicious act was premeditated, plain and simple--and far more deserving of a lengthier sentence.
