Georgia might turn down part of stimulus money, governor says

  • Follow Latest News

ATLANTA — Gov. Sonny Perdue says Georgia may turn down part of the federal economic stimulus money because it might not be in the state's best interest to accept it.

Perdue says his office is reviewing the funding requirements about accepting the billions of dollars in federal aid Georgia expects to get.

He told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution during an interview at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington that officials need to determine what's in the best long-term interest of the state.

He said Sunday he's concerned about accepting money for Georgia's unemployment insurance because it could cost the state more in the future.

Southern Republican governors from states including South Carolina, Louisiana and Mississippi have said they may reject part of the money.

Strange that the Porkulus

Strange that the Porkulus package has strings attached but the banks didn't. I admire the Republican governors for no accepting pork and federal stings that will affect future state budgets.

No heaven't no don't take help because the futures says we'll have to pay it back! How much more can this state take?

Taking money just because it

Taking money just because it is available with no regard to whether we can pay it back and no concern as to how it will affect us in the future couldn't possibly get us in any trouble...

With the strings attached to

With the strings attached to the part of the stimulus Sonny is looking at, the fed money will run out and the state will have to make up the difference. That means a tax hike. Tricky stuff for a pres that is dedicated to tax cuts.

The state would be more

The state would be more stupid than usual if they did not consider the long term impact. Federal money oftentimes is a short term funding mechanism (remember the more cops on the streets funding from the '90's) that evaporates after a set period. In order to continue programs they fund (rarely do any programs go away) local taxes are raised to make up for the loss.

Are we talking about the

Are we talking about the Sonny who is trying to get the courts to absolve his debts? Smoething like 26 Million? Isn't that kinda like having a transfer of wealth? In other words the payees being forced to pay for the mistakes of the business owner? I thought he was against all forms of redistribution of wealth but he appears to be a do-as-I-say, not do-as-I-do politician.

Some of y'all remind me of that woman who was shouting that she didn't have to pay for her house anymore because Obama was elected. Yeah, free money alright. No wonder the stock market says Obama needs a teleprompter with new information on it.

Everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves. If they have to take a pay cut, so be it. Others before you have had to do it. You will survive.

Seems Deke screwed this one up. Did he even bother to submit any projects in the 2008 U.S. Conference of Mayors? Did he bother to go? Guess they were to busy with the SPLOST project.

Fed Up (either one), you are

Fed Up (either one), you are free to move away any time you like. If you are so fed up with Augusta and MCG; move somewhere else where there are plenty of high paying jobs available for someone with your obviously high skill level and strong work ethic. Maybe Michigan or Ohio, or some other state where unions help insure "fair" wages for all workers? Or, you could try California where the governor is willing to accept any and all federal money regardless of the strings. So, don't go away mad, just go away.

If you read the frequently

If you read the frequently asked questions you would see this
9. Why is my city not listed?
The data on this site comes from the U.S. Conference of Mayors' MainStreet Economic Recovery Report. If a city did not include its "shovel-ready" projects on that list, you won't find it here. However, this does not mean that cities that are not included here do not have projects they'd like to see funded. Once the stimulus bill passes, cites will make requests for federal grants, and we will likely see grants to projects not listed on this site.
