Dead jail inmate identified

A Burke County man has been identified as the inmate who is believed to have hanged himself Sunday in the Richmond County jail.

The Richmond County Coroner's Office identified him as Cecil Coleman Johnston, 56, of Sardis.

Further questions were referred to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is now handling the case.

Why wasn't this man placed on

Why wasn't this man placed on a suicide watch? Jail officials are trained to look for signs of potential suicidal inmates, so they cannot plead ignorance in this case. Even though an individual is incarcerated, it does not mean they are berift of humane care.
