Controlled burn at Fort Gordon might lead to smoky skies

  • Follow Latest News

Forestry management officials plan to conduct controlled burning activities today involving about 790 acres at Fort Gordon, according to Columbia County’s Emergency Services Department.

The boundaries of the areas to be burned include Harlem-Grovetown Road, Gordon Highway and other areas in Columbia and Richmond Counties. Because of wind direction, smoke is expected to be “very visible” in the Grovetown area.

Prescribed burning is a forestry management technique that helps reduce the amount of debris on the forest floor that could ignite during forest fires. Periodic burning also aids regeneration of native vegetation and improves soil quality.

Burning activities are expected to be complete by 6 p.m. today.

If you have weak lungs, you better move before you end up in the ICU. They should NOT be allowed to do this. What is the point of reducing CO2 emissions from factories and cars or outlawing smoking before you are 18? The tons of CO2 and the tons of particulate smoke released in a 800 acre burn dwarf all the things regulators make laws against.

Controlled burns prevent a much larger forest fire that produces one heck of a lot more smoke and CO2. Use your brain and you might be able to figure this out. It only took me about 3 seconds to. It's amazing how some people have no common sense whatsoever. Please spare us as to the amount of intelligence that you don't have.
