The boundaries of the areas to be burned include Harlem-Grovetown Road, Gordon Highway and other areas in Columbia and Richmond Counties. Because of wind direction, smoke is expected to be very visible in the Grovetown area.
Prescribed burning is a forestry management technique that helps reduce the amount of debris on the forest floor that could ignite during forest fires. Periodic burning also aids regeneration of native vegetation and improves soil quality.
Burning activities are expected to be complete by 6 p.m. today.
