Augusta city commissioners approved a final SPLOST list this afternoon totaling $184,724,000 in civic expenditures.

The vote on the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax passed 9-0 with Commissioner Joe Bowles absent.

Mayor Pro tem Alvin Mason made the motion to approve City Administrator Fred Russell's suggested amount with two changes.

He subtracted $1.5 million from a cost escalation reserve fund and added an extra $1 million for the Regency Mall lake plan.

He then added $500,000 for the Garden City Beautification Initiative plan to spruce up gateways to the city.

It's time for the SPLOST to

It's time for the SPLOST to die. It's lingered on long enough. We have people that can't afford a gallon of milk, and are losing their homes, but the City/County can't manage their budget so they put it on our (the tax-payers) back. Multi-million dollar special projects, normal projects that the normal budget should pay for.

Just because you can have a SPLOST, doesn't mean you have to have a SPLOST.

If the commission can't learn to manage themselves and the budget, it's time to replace all of them!!!

This is a time when everyone

This is a time when everyone INCLUDING the Richmond Co. Commission needs to learn to live within their means. Regency Mall lake plan? I can't believe my ears. That is so stupid. That is like if I didn't have enough money to pay my house payment but still went out and charged a vacation on my credit card. That will be a flop and we'll be deeper in debt. Good going commission.

Lay off people before you

Lay off people before you take another dollar from me. I have never voted FOR a single tax in my life. It is ridiculous that we give them so much to spend on THEIR projects and THEIR timelines.

All you have to do is vote NO

All you have to do is vote NO when it comes up for a vote. I will, for no other reason than I think the Regency Mall lake and Garden City Beautification additions are over the top!

I did vote no for splost but

I did vote no for splost but I guess somebody voted yes. Problem is the commission is still going to do this stupid kind of stuff. It they don't get splost, they will just increase our property taxes even more. They are a bunch of idiots! Please somebody tell me how we can get rid of them. Why won't some smart finacially savy people run for the commission?

I've voted NO for each and

I've voted NO for each and every SPLOST (the key work here is LOST as in LOST your money...so sorry), but we (the city/county) keep voting in people who 1. Don't get along at the meetings, 2. Can't manage a budget, 3. End up in jail for embezzling funds, 4. Want the Government to be as big as possible.

Remember...a Government that is big enough to give you everything you want, is also big enough to take away everything you've got!

Old crowd of lets do nothing.

Old crowd of lets do nothing. Vote yes for splost. We need to keep moving forward. Money to the miller, infrastructure, quality of life, and other things. Will benefit from the splost.

Moving Forward! I've yet to

Moving Forward! I've yet to see any indication where Augusta is moving forward. Racism, even among our Commissioners, gang type killings at "children's" clubs. Roads that are falling apart, primary entry ways to the city that need cleaning up (flying over the sewage plant, please). Allowing big businesses in Augusta to dump their hazardous waste into the Savannah River, then trying to blame the problem on SRS or Plant Vogtle.

The Miller is falling apart because it's owners gave up on it. Time for it to go, the infrastruction is falling apart because the commission can't manage a budget. Quality of Life is what YOU make it, not what the Governement supplies you.

People need real jobs, and tax REDUCTIONS, not business as usual. Augusta needs VOLUNTEERS to get off their dead [filtered word] and go out and make Augusta beautiful. If you own property, keep it up, if you live close to city property, help clean it up. Don't rely on the commission to put out our tax dollars for everything.

I'm just curious. If voters

I'm just curious. If voters approve splost that is to be directed toward certain things and that money is not used for said expenditures. Is that embezzlement? Seems like it would be in the private sector. Or at least misappropriation of government funds.

The only way to beautify this

The only way to beautify this city is to purge it of generational welfare people. They are trashy. Drive across the bridge and instantly the environment changes because few generational welfare people live in North Augusta.
