Two private after-hour bars in North Augusta, The Spot and The Shack, have been shut down by the county’s building inspector for code violations.

The two nightclubs, which were closed last week, have been a source of problems for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, with deputies frequently going on service calls to the clubs because of complaints, according to the department.

In the past four years, sheriff’s deputies have responded to 53 service calls to The Shack, 38 of those after 2 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.

At The Spot, deputies have responded to 121 calls, 98 of which were after 2 a.m., and since December, the after-hours bar has been the site of two shootings that injured four people, the sheriff's office said today.

On Tuesday night the Aiken County Council approved on second reading an ordinance that would require bars in the county to close by 2 a.m. The council will consider final approval of the bill at its next meeting.

Give me a break if people

Give me a break if people want to party after 2 am then let them. Half the time aiken county deputies were at the spot partying just as much as everyone else. I am a grown woman I don't need aiken county or the government telling me when I need to go home.

This is a real shame.

This is a real shame. Everyone that has a negative comment should first understand, these places are private, just like your church, your home, your automobile. When are we going to stop giving other people knives to slice our throat? One day, we will wake up when we have given away our rights and allowed someone to barge into our home and do whatever they wish...but then it will be too late. Clubs, bars etc can be regulated without imposing unconstitutional mandates, remember these places are “private”. Would any of you be upset if the local majority decided it was time to close your church or private school because we did not like what went on there? If we base the closures on the number of calls that the local authorities receive then we must close Wal-Mart, the bowling alley, Georgia Avenue and several other places that receive “service calls” Besides, is that not the job of the authorities to provide “service calls”.
Oh, and by the way, I have been to The Shack but I am not a regular customer. As far as I know we the people still continue to have the right of “Freedom of Assembly”, or is Aiken County Council working on that one too?
