City Administrator Fred Russell, who removed an $8 million allocation for Regency Mall redevelopment from a list of projects being considered for special purpose local option sales tax money, today presented commissioners an alternative: $2.5 million to build a 13-acre lake north of the defunct mall.

Mr. Russell said buying or condemning Regency Mall is not practical. He said waterfront property would spur development while leaving Regency Mall on the tax books for $4.2 million.

Lets build a water park with 2.5 million. It could be near the airport, Hepzhibah, Mcbean, Blythe, or off mike padgett, or downtown. Fred I could understand a beach but a lake?

Aren't there enough lakes in

Aren't there enough lakes in the CSRA. Fred has to go Im sorry I know he's trying but he sucks. We need to build a huge park downtown. Where you can walk to the suburbs, jog, walk your dog, swim, play basketball, roller skate, skate board, ride in a raft in some water, walk on a bridge over some water, sit or stand on the bridge if you want to, kayak or canoe, have a picnic, and be able to watch a concert at a ampitheatre. Fred thats a better use of that 2.5 million than a lake. My idea would shoot Augusta quality of life up 50 points. Who wants to go to a lake when there are already lakes in the CSRA.

I would like to know that

I would like to know that also. Where is this 13 acres and how far is it from Regency mall. The property may end up being about 3 miles away or more. And the article may mean near in that context.

It must be really nice to

It must be really nice to plan a budget when you are spending OPM (other people's money). Now, Fred, if that was such a grand idea and made economic sense, don't you know that a real estate developer would have already done just that. (Everyone knows the REAL reason why the mall closed. No one would let their primarily female family members go shopping there because of the hoodlums that were allowed to hang out in the parking lot and outside the stores.) If you want to increase the tax revenue being wasted on that place, why not deed the land over to a developer who plans to spend their OWN money and give them several tax incentives to create something of value on that piece of property?

Whatever became of the Ellis

Whatever became of the Ellis Street Canal & Dinner Cruise idea? A lemonade stand on the moon would also be nice.

Heh, Little Lamb got it. What

Heh, Little Lamb got it. What about those other lakes right down Gordon Highway from there? See all that development around them? I want to know who held Fred's hand in the visionary class he apparently attended.

oh my, you're kidding, right?

oh my, you're kidding, right? as milton1874 says, what a great place to dump bodies and trash. should be quite attractive since the citizens in that part take such good care of what they already have.

Jaschild. Kinda looks like

Jaschild. Kinda looks like you think the downtown is a jewel in the crown of the CSRA. That part of town isn't perfect, but I'll guarantee you it looks better than most sections of broad street, especially the T---y bar area. I will foreever be amazed by you folks. You have absolutely no problem with spending 6-12 million for the enjoyment of about 1 percent (at best) of the population, just because it is stacked on top of downtown. But when it comes to other parts of town you act as if we aren't consolidated.

Would someone please check to

Would someone please check to see where the earthquake fault line runs? I lived within a 1/4 mile of there for awhile and we had a quake that shook the whole house, everyone in the house felt it. It was centered in Vidalia, Georgia and reached here along the fault line. Before you make some artificial lake, please check the geographical features of that site. It was a Sunday and I couldn't reach a soul that knew what was going on. But my sister called me from Seattle WA and asked me if I felt the quake. She'd seen it on an earthquake report. Not one media here in Augusta reported it. I thought that was very odd, even for a Sunday.

Are there any pics available

Are there any pics available of what shape this property is in as far as the interior? I have heard many say that condemnation is probably a better alternative because of how bad off it is inside.

Really? Are you freaking kidding me? Will there be anyone left in Augusta that actually makes money to pay taxes in a few years or will they all move to North Augusta and Columbia County?
