The sentence of death for convicted murderer Luke A. Williams III has been scheduled to be carried out by lethal injection Feb. 20 at the S.C. Department of Corrections’ capital punishment facility located at Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia.

The S.C. Supreme Court on Friday issued an order directing the Corrections Department to carry out the sentence.

Mr. Williams, a former Evans, Ga., resident, was found guilty of the June 1991 murders of his wife, Linda, and their 12-year-old son, Shaun.

Mrs. Williams, a Bel Air Elementary School paraprofessional, was beaten to death. Shaun was strangled.

Their bodies were doused with gasoline and set afire in the family van, which was driven into a tree in Edgefield County, in what police said was a botched attempt at staging a fiery accident.

Why not January 23? We should

Why not January 23? We should be more like China in that when a death sentence is given, the guilty are taken right then and there and shot......no lengthy appeals process and the unending mental torture of all involved. It's a heckuva deterrent, too.

IT is truly sad that we, a civilized nation, is still putting people to death. Why not life in prison if he must be punished. We could put him to death and he wakes up in heaven, then, whose the winner?

I remember when this case

I remember when this case happened. I had just moved into a newer section of the same neighborhood the Williams' lived in. I remember wondering what kind of neighborhood I had just moved into. There was nothing wrong with the neighborhood, of course, but the case reminded me that ANYTHING can happen anywhere at any time. Having said all of that, why has it taken 18 years for the sentence to be carried out? If we're going to have capital punishment, it shouldn't take over a decade, let alone two decades, to carry out the sentence.

jack, your point is noted. I

jack, your point is noted. I think that the main reason is that if a person is given life without parole, s/he can kill guards, employees, other prisoners...and literally, nothing more can be done. I wouldn't want to work in a prison with hardened murders who know darn well that they are there for life and can therefore do as they please without no additional punishment. Then there is the cost involved that we should not be forced to pay.

"Mr. Williams, a former

"Mr. Williams, a former Evans, Ga., resident" ------ CC is getting it's share of criminals, and unlike RC crime, you can almost guarantee with a population of 78.8% White, the perp will be White. Makes the who race crime diddy here moot. You will never fool forensics, as technology improves, once cold cases will become hot again (there is no time limit on homicides). They're even making attempts in identifying cremains (what bone fragments that are left after cremation -- you are not reduced to ash, but identifiable shards of bone, which is then mechanically crushed [and adding some calcium powder to lighten and improve texture]) which folks believe -- for now -- can't leave traces. They'll get caught eventually, and the main reason is, one mind isn't as good as a team of others. Gets them everytime.

The Iranians have a neat method. When sombody is convicted of being a drug dealer, they drive a crane into the hood where he/she sold and proceed to hoist the condenmed by the neck up into the air so everybody can watch the kicking and flailing.

Too much caffeine this

Too much caffeine this morning mimsy?...:-)I suppose my only thoughts on the subject would have to be when this man was arrested or as so often happens if he had tried to shoot it out with the police he would also be shot just like the guy in Cherry Hill...The difference would have to be there would never have been a riot...He would just be out there on his lonesome....Big difference...

sgachief, you aren't God.

sgachief, you aren't God. Only God can judge a man to eternity. We can condemn him to death, but eternity isn't up to us. Luke 6:37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven."
