One man is dead and an Aiken County sheriff’s deputy is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds after an early morning shooting at an Aiken convenience store.

Deputies responded to the Four Seasons Food and Fuel at the corner of Whiskey Road and Citadel Drive this morning for a welfare check on the clerk, according to sheriff’s Lt. Troy Elwell.

When they arrived, one deputy was shot several times by a man inside the store, he said. That deputy returned fire, killing the shooter.

Authorities have not released the names of either the shooter or the deputies on the scene, citing a press conference later this morning at 10 a.m.

At least one witness was inside the convenience store at the time of the incident, Lt. Elwell said. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate.

Lt. Elwell said it’s still very early in the investigation but that they believe an armed robbery may have been in progress when the deputies arrived at the scene.

My prayers are with the Aiken

My prayers are with the Aiken County Sheriff's Deputy wounded in this incident. This same building was the site of a double murder dozens of years ago during an armed robbery. Makes me wonder if this building needs to be razed and something else put in there.

Good job by the deputy. We

Good job by the deputy. We hope he makes a quick recovery and gets a raise. Wait a second I hope this wasn't a case of a racist police officer oppressing anyone. What time is the riot?

PraetorianGuard - You are

PraetorianGuard - You are right. If this incident had happened in Augusta, as in recent history, it would have all been about race and a riot would have ensued. God bless the officer and all officers everywhere. They have tough jobs to do, especially in these times. Unfortunately, crime is only going to get worse with the economy in the situation it is in.

It is sad when

It is sad when people(jerks)insert race in any incident. It does not matter what color is on the other side of that gun when you are getting shot at. I say put their lights out !

Those who do inject race into

Those who do inject race into this incident must be from Richmond County. Keep your racist comments confined to your side of the river.

Glad the deputy is stable in

Glad the deputy is stable in the hospital. Shooter's dead, that makes me happy too. One less criminal that we have to be worried with. Sorry for his family, though.

To Serve and Protect! Good

To Serve and Protect! Good Job Deputy! Godspeed on your recovery. As I said before, an officer hates to shoot someone, but when the suspect does not give him an option, he must protect. Prayers to all involved as they sort through the tradegy.

The defintion of prejudice is

The defintion of prejudice is to pre judge.Nowhere in the article has the description of the deputy or the suspect been mentioned. All the Aiken deputies must be white and alll the criminals black.

I am a police officer, and

I am a police officer, and the last thing any officer want to do is to take someone life, no matter what color. we have a job to do and all of us try to do it as safety as we can. when it comes down to pulling that trigger, we will have to live with that for the rest of our lives. I pray that the deputy is going to be all right, and my prayers with him and his family at this time.MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

I had three brothers and one nephew who were law enforcement officials at one time. One is still a chief investigator there. I commend you on a job well done.

MA2 - your version of truth

MA2 - your version of truth is flawed. You obviously didn't read the story or got your facts from another source, probably PG. The article didn't list the race of either the dead man or the deputy so why would you assume that a riot would ensue. I guess reasoning like yours is part of the problem why there are so many race related problems in Augusta.
