Festival to celebrate gift to Juilliard

The city of Aiken and the Juilliard School are celebrating a relationship begun in 1996 with the gift of music.

The inaugural Juilliard in Aiken music festival will take place March 9-14 in Aiken. The event traces its roots to the 1996 bequest of Joye Cottage, a 60-room home near downtown Aiken, to the school in 1996. Although the gift was initially intended to be honored after the passing of the home’s owners, Steve Naifeh and Greg Smith, the men said they were eager to see the relationship between Aiken and Juilliard develop before the school took possession.

“If Juilliard inhabiting this house is to have any real viability, then it has to be part of the community,” Mr. Naifeh said.

The festival will feature five concerts and a variety of outreach and artist-in-residence programs.
