Augusta lies south of the region expected to receive snowfall on Tuesday and likely will see no accumulation, according to the National Weather Service, which updated emergency preparedness officials – and its forecast - during an afternoon conference call.

“We are south of the area where the greatest concern for heavier snowfall amounts are expected,” said Columbia County Emergency Services Director Pam Tucker. “They stated that it's very questionable as to whether the CSRA will see any accumulation of snow, but they will leave the CSRA under the advisory through the night to be on the safe side.”

Earlier forecasts called for a 60 percent chance of snow Tuesday with possible accumulations of one inch.

Portions of upstate South Carolina remain under a winter storm warning, with accumulations of one to three inches forecast in some northern South Carolina counties.

Unless conditions change, the Augusta area will have mostly rain with no expected traffic problems.

“They advised that we could have a few isolated issues with some icy patches on bridges and overpasses, nothing too significant,” Mrs. Tucker said. “Roadways should be fine and passable since surface temperatures will remain at or above freezing. If we do see a little snowfall, it should all be gone by noon tomorrow.”

As a precaution, the county’s Emergency Operations Center will be open at 3 a.m. Tuesday to monitor road conditions. Columbia County Board of Education Transportation Director Dewayne Porter and school trustee Mike Sleeper will be out at 4 a.m. checking roads for ice.

The current forecast calls for highs in the 50s today, with cloudy skies this evening and lows dipping to the upper 20s with a slight chance of rain and possible snow flurries after midnight. Colder temperatures are expected Tuesday night, with lows around 19 degrees, followed by a warming trend on Wednesday with highs in the mid 40s, forecasters said.

I am hoping for no ice or

I am hoping for no ice or snow. The 1973 ice storm was really something. My bro-in-law was trying to come from Jacksonville, got no further than Waynesboro. Someone with a Rabbit went and picked him up. That was enough for me.

Everyone should throw a

Everyone should throw a French toast party so they can use up all that bread and milk. Just let me know where to bring my bottle of syrup! Can't until the next time Pam and the Chronicle decide to stir us all up with threats of a huge 1 inch snowstorm so we can ski down memory lane again.
