Authorities investigating explosives at Martinez home

Federal and local authorities sealed off a Martinez residence today and searched it for explosives after learning the homeowner had been injured in a small blast days before.

Officials with the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Fort Gordon, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Richmond County sheriff’s Bomb Squad spent much of the day at 319 Sally Drive, off Furys Ferry Road near River Watch Parkway.

Authorities said they first arrived Friday, after learning the homeowner had been injured in a Tuesday explosion.

Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said “bomb making ingredients” were found at the home, but authorities were still in the process of identifying materials and expect to resume a search for any other potential ingredients tomorrow.

Capt. Morris identified the home’s resident as Chad Wells, 37. He said Mr. Wells, a Realtor, lived there alone, and “he has lost one if not numerous fingers.”

Beth Frits, a spokeswoman for the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, said Mr. Wells was listed in good condition Saturday at the burn center.

Today, officials were searching the Sally Drive property; its backyard, which included a shed; and an area across the street. They said any explosive materials would be removed and disposed of.

Anthony Russo, a supervisory senior resident agent for the FBI’s Augusta office, said the case was turned over to ATF after officials ruled out any connection to terrorism.

“There was no imminent risk to the community,” Agent Russo said.

Capt. Morris said Mr. Wells has been interviewed, but no charges had been filed. Mr. Wells initially told authorities he had been injured in a firecracker accident, Capt. Morris said, “but the injuries to his hand and what we have observed at the scene tell a much different story.”

Agent Russo said his office was contacted Friday by the hospital after reviewing the man’s injuries and “comments he may have made to staff.”

Agent Russo would not describe those comments.

Officials said they were in the process of determining the quantity of “bomb making ingredients” at and around the home on Saturday.

Robert Cave, who lives across the street from 319 Sally Drive, said the injured homeowner has lived in the area for about five years and, “He’s been pretty quiet.”

He said that for the past six months, he had heard explosive “thumps” coming from the home.

Mr. Cave said at the time he didn’t really think anything of the sounds he was hearing, but added “He just didn’t know what he was getting into. It might have got too big for him.”

According to Columbia Co

According to Columbia Co Website, this guy owns 3 properties in that same area. Don't worry, namasta, they'll find fingerprints. May be more to this story than meets the eye, huh?

What is it about CC

What is it about CC residents?? They complain about crime and all in RC, but look what's in their own backyard. Come on, when some next door neighbor is saying they're making bombs, does a CC neighbor just laugh it off??? If I heard those "thumps" I'd be on the phone to call the cops, especially after the bomb making confession! You can never tell in this post-Columbine/911 world what bomb makers would be upto.

I cannot believe the neighbor

I cannot believe the neighbor just let it go right over his head about getting the bomb material!!!! I lived in CC when there were nothing but farms, I lived on a hundred acre one and the people in RC used to say we were dumb hicks, but that was over 40 years ago, what is their excuse now???? DUH!!!! My neighbor tells me he's going to build a bomb & I start reaching for the phone and dial 911 and let the Sheriff's Dept. go and ask a few questions, don't ya think? I might be in my 60's and my hair white, but I ain't that stupid to just think he might have gotten in over his head?? Where in the world have you been neighbor?? I needed you around when I threw wild & noisy parties, just minding your own business then, too?? Sorry I got carried away there, but it just got to me that he could have blown half the neighborhood up and it could have been stopped, even losing his fingers could have been stopped!!!! Plus, I can't believe the really ridiculis remark about the bus to DC. Are you the neighbor by any chance?

I know some of the guy's

I know some of the guy's neighbors and they say he is kind of weird and most tended just to ignore him. As I heard it, one of the neighbors that actually knew him well and visted him in the hospital said he lost his whole hand. There are STILL numerous emergency and law enforcement vehicles there as of right now with the whole street blocked off. Saw that for myself a few minutes ago. Sounds like it's a bigger mess in there than ANY of his neighbors could have imagined or they'd, law enforcement, be cleared out of there by now. You just never know about people. Some talk crazy and are harmless. Some are NOT.

And just to add, my friends

And just to add, my friends who are neighbors never heard the Tuesday explosion that took his hand. They had heard strange booms now and then before that, but not distinctly enough where they could figure out where they were coming from.

I'm glad it was just a guy in Columbia County building bombs. If an empty shotgun shell had been found in an inner city project in Richmond County there would be 100 racist posts on here already.

Is the home owner sane?

Is the home owner sane? Doesn't sound like it to me. Perhaps he needs to be committed for an evaluation! The neighbor who was told by the home owner that he was "ordiering things on-line to make bombs" should have notified the authorites then, not after the fact.

“There was no imminent risk

“There was no imminent risk to the community,” Agent Russo said. Bwahhahhahah! Naw, situation totally under control, as the guy losing at least a few fingers, maybe his hand, leads us to believe. Not. Spin it any way you want, I'm not buying it.

You guys really don't know

You guys really don't know anything about building explosive devices, do you? Never went to chemistry class?
And you're ready to call police on anybody you think is weird already. I sense it's time to start burning witches again. Obviously, that practice filled a great human need. Think what you want about this fellow - but remember this: GOOD bomb makers don't make mistakes like this. They can be anybody. Paranoid yet?

I think this was a suicide

I think this was a suicide attempt gone wrong. If you remember a year ago, the woman who commited suicide in the motel on Riverwatch and had her gift cards stolen by the assisant coroner in RC, was his girlfriend. I don't think he has recovered from that. Also, he's a realtor which could add to his distress.

"You guys really don't know

"You guys really don't know anything about building explosive devices, do you? Never went to chemistry class?" ----- Most I remember are what kids did with unrolling firecrackers (or when cherry bombs were legal). But that's the sum of the "explosives class". But this is an ADULT, who even bragged to a neighbor of making BOMBS!! Any neighbor making bombs, especially in their residence is a hazard to the WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD, and needs to be locked up quick.

'Capt. Morris said, “but the injuries to his hand and what we have observed at the scene tell a much different story.” ' ------ Oh, yeah! The doctors will grill you if your hand is injured. Spent like 30 minutes telling a doc how my finger was even cut, as they'll probe more than the wound. So you bomb makers and other evil critters, the docs are going to find out any suspicious wound --- especially blast and bullet hole injuries no matter how you try to cover it up with some wild story. Might as well turn yourselves in. Dummy, an injury like that would've had explosive residue out of the kazoo showing up, let alone you'd smell like a chemical factory, doesn't matter if you changed clothes.

Lets see if "they" follow the pattern....stay tuned.

It could be because he's not even out of the hospital yet to be booked. Such blasts require surgery to correct the damage. You should already know this being a so-called 15 year "Army" vet!

"If you remember a year ago,

"If you remember a year ago, the woman who commited suicide in the motel on Riverwatch and had her gift cards stolen by the assisant coroner in RC, was his girlfriend." ----- Did she in fact commit suicide? Add the things up, she's dead supposely right after graduating from nursing school; assistant coroner is caught cashing in on gift cards; and now a bomb making ex-"companion". This reads more like a bad made-for-TV show.
