Confederate history month pushed for Georgia

  • Follow Latest News

ATLANTA - Some Georgia lawmakers want to designate April as Confederate Heritage and History month.

Legislation was introduced in Georgia's House and Senate on Friday that would celebrate the Confederate States of America. Under the bill, governments, schools, businesses and Georgia citizens would be encouraged to participate in programs throughout the month.

The legislation was sponsored by Sen. John Bulloch, a Republican from Ochlocknee, and Rep. Alan Powell, a Democrat from Hartwell.

That is a really good idea.

That is a really good idea. But I fear it won't pass. Too many naysayers and Negative Nates will put a prejudice slant on it, instead of seeing this for what it really is... a chance for those in the South, regardless of their race, to celebrate their heritage. I hope they put it to a public vote, let the people decide.

"a chance for those in the

"a chance for those in the South, regardless of their race, to celebrate their heritage." Uh, I don't see too many desendants of slaves finding anything to celebrate...If it doesn't pass those who want to honor the confederacy still should, matter of fact, when did they stop??? You have Daughters of the Confederacy, Sons of the Confederacy, re-enactors, and other groups who celebrate that era... But put to a vote before the public it will not pass.

On a serious note, April

On a serious note, April would be perfect. April 26th is Confederate Memorial Day (most Southern states observe this day)

In the name of true

In the name of true diversity...let's openly be given the chance to celebrate our southern heritage without shame, ridicule, and with honor to our ancestors. This remains one of the most discriminated against cultures of modern times. This idea is long overdue.

How about getting rid of ALL

How about getting rid of ALL of these "months" and just teach the damn subject of TRUE history like it's supposed to be. Is that too much to ask?

February would be a better

February would be a better confederacy month. Sharing it with black history month would emphasize the small role slavery played in the confederacy, as apposed to the union.

I think April is the better

I think April is the better month for Confederate history. It is the month when the South left the Union and it's also the same month that the South surrendered as Big Losers. You lost get over it! Did not win. Union 1, CSA 0. He, he, he.

It never ceases to amaze me

It never ceases to amaze me that in the 402 years our nation's history since the founding of Jamestown, so many people are fixated on a 4 year portion of it. It goes to show how backwards and racist the south still is. I have ancestors who fought in the Revolution and the Civil War. I'm much prouder of those who fought in the Revolution. I have been approached by some in the Son's of Confederate Veterans to join but have found most of them to be among the most racist people I have ever seen. Why not an American Revolution month (why just 7/4) instead of Confederate month. The heritage of the South consists of much more than the 4 years of a rebellion brought on by white plantation owners. Heck, why not NASCAR month. Then we can show the rest of the nation just how many peckerwoods there still are in this state.

Would've worked 50 years ago,

Would've worked 50 years ago, but the demographics of this state has changed so much in 20 years, there's few descendants left to celebrate it. It's also divisive, and will open more sub-groups wanting recognition. Next thing on the block would be GLBT month in GA; Atheist month; Child-Adult Sex month....on and on and on until they've made a Plutonian calendar's worth of "celebrations". Folks just don't think ahead.

I'm waiting till Yankee

I'm waiting till Yankee Carpetbaggers Month is celebrated. It would seem the South is Eternally indebted to them. Kinda fitting don't you think.......almost like Slavery and just as legal.

We in Georgia should

We in Georgia should Celebrate Confederate History Month by Seceding from the United States on April First and Re-joining it on May first each year. At least then, we could be free from Slavery for one month a year.

Is this what the South has to

Is this what the South has to celebrate and be proud of? Most places like to separate themselves from any part of their negative past. You do not see Germans wanting to celebrate "Nazi History Month"

Maybe if we celebrate

Maybe if we celebrate Confederate History maybe the yankees would go back for the day, month or maybe they would just stay and leave us alone. I can't understand why the yankees move south and then all they do is complain about everything, if it's that bad just go back, please.

Some of us haven't exactly

Some of us haven't exactly moved here by choice. I would also like to point out that the South is now part of the Union...so...you are also Yankees. We happen to be proud of being Yankees too! A little poem for everyone by E.B. White.....
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

Why do you want us to go back so badly? Have we done anything to you that has hurt the South?
