The Rev. Al Shapton called for peace but also justice during the funeral today of the man shot by police Dec. 14 at a local public housing complex.

Speaking at Macedonia Baptist Church on Wrightsboro Road, the Rev. Sharpton, who was in town to help host the annual James Brown Christmas toy-giveaway, met earlier with family members of Justin Leonard Elmore, who died from the wounds he received. He was shot by Richmond County sheriff's deputies Michael Hodge and Jose Rivera Ortiz, who had stopped Mr. Elmore at Cherry Tree Crossing on a tip he had drugs and weapons in his SUV, then claimed the man tried to run them over after they'd boxed him in.

The Rev. Sharpton, who also met with local ministers and police, arrived at the church about 11 a.m. He called for a full investigation into the shooting.

The GBI is investigating the case -- can't get much more "full" than that. Did the family also discuss his criminal record with the Reverend Sharpton? I think not... I just really want it to be done.

Where was Jesse? It seems as if Sharpton and Jackson are usually a tag team when it comes to interfering in local events. Remember Tawana Brawley and the Duke lacrosse players? Ever hear a retraction or an admission of having been wrong in those events? So here we go again - an investigation IS being done so let the GBI sort it out. If the man tried to run over a policeman, case closed. If he was a felon with drugs and weapons in his vehicle who didn't cooperate with the police, case closed.

I just saw the funeral

I just saw the funeral procession and it was very bizarre. There was a man hanging out of a car window holding up a shirt with a picture of Justin Elmore that I think said "I love you." First time I've seen that before.

I agree with all comments.

I agree with all comments. Instead of spending so much time trying to chastise and point the finger at those who try to protect us, why doesn't Al Sharpton spend more time chastising the criminals and those who want to harm us? I know, because that is too much work and would not line his pockets as much. Al Sharpton needs to take the "Rev." from the beginning of his name. He is divisive and goes against God's word when it comes to being blind to our differences. He is neither a Reverend or revered.

Mr. Sharpton is NOT wanted

Mr. Sharpton is NOT wanted nor needed here. When he shows his face it only causes more "race" issues and he lives to stir the pot. This matter does not involve him. In the end this was a known drug dealer who tried to hurt or possibly kill sheriffs deputies and they defended themselves and the general public. This was no angel by any means yet people are acting as if he was a saint.

Al Sharton does not promote

Al Sharton does not promote hatred... That's just white folks way of saying blacks should not stand up for themselves. I agree that Mr. Elmore put his life in danger if he tried to run over the police, but there is nothing wrong with pressuring the police for the truth. Besides, it was RCSO officer just three months ago called a black child not in a child seat a da** monkey. Just imagine if RCSO have white folks with the racial mentality as some of you idiots on this site? Every comment about this case is never centered on truthfulness, it seems white folks are using this incident to demonstrate just how right Jeremiah Wright was to condemn white folks. Stop blaming blacks for your obvious racial hatred and go home and blame your silly white parents and grandparents. You guys don't even know Mr. Elmore, but have allowed your bigotry to make you feel comfortable with his death at the hands of the police.

While I am against blaming

While I am against blaming the police for this, I am also adamant that those who are clamoring for the blacks to blame the criminal, I think about all those who screamed that the boy who had a rifle in his car for 5 days on school property, and then only turned himself in because he was afraid his car would be searched, got in school suspension. There is a double standard in this city and country, and it's not race, it's social stratification. It's those who have against those who have not. This attitude is un-Christian and UNAMERICAN! I condemn those who have this selfish, self-centered attitude, and pray that God will do whatever it takes to change your hearts, especially at this time of year when giving is the spirit of the day.

GACOPPERHEAD, I totally agree

GACOPPERHEAD, I totally agree with your comment about social stratification. But, gangbanging, and dealing drugs is not the way out. However, I would like to hear Sharpton talk to young people about changing their mindset and their lives, going to school and then college, getting off of welfare and becoming productive citizens of this community. I believe that folks in Augusta want young people to succeed, but the young people need to do their part. Maybe Sharpton can teach them how so this doesn't have to happen again. I ask God to order the steps of this young man's three children so they never have to walk in his shoes and so they would live a godly life.

On the Jeremiah Wright issue:

On the Jeremiah Wright issue: What I heard from the excerpt of his sermon was that if we do not wake up and change our ways it is just like asking God to d--- America. We, in effect, are damning ourselves by our own actions (our own immorality) and how we treat each other and how we deal with other nations. That's what I heard from what he said.

JD(BONE)6969..a change is

JD(BONE)6969..a change is coming "weather" whether we like it or not? I sure hope it's a change in the mentality of idiots who can not get it through their thick skull that if you break the law by possessing illegal drugs and attempting to run over these "sworn police officers"-whether you are white, black, asian, etc. it's breaking the law. I can't understand how some people fail to see why Justin Elmore was shot. I can guarantee that I would not attempt to run over a police officer because I would be affraid I would be stopped by any means necessary.

He is only interested in publicity for himself. GOD help them all!

All this yall talking in

All this yall talking in nonsense, this man is dead. Let him Rest In Peace. No matter what he did when he was here they had no valid reason to kill him. Yea im commenting as his friend none of yall knew him. Half of yall may have friends or family members out here doing the same as this man was doing, and tell me can somebody kill them b/c of it. They knew what they were doing. If this man was raming the police cars shouldnt they have shot out the tires first. At what point was that done. Them damn police knew this man car wasnt stolen. They the same police that be out there in sunset everyday all day. And they didnt find any drugs or guns in his cars. Anyways b4 yall come on here and start to comment take a look @ urselves and ur family and know that this could have happened to anyone including u. And no matter what the situation maybe than and now they shouldnt have killed him. JED u will truely be missed and u know we holding u down. !RIP JED!

what I don't understand is

what I don't understand is why is this turning in to a black and white argument? Wasn't it a Black man and Hispanic man that shot him??? If he didn't have drugs in the vehicle why did he try to run even if it meant going through officers??? He was shot during committing a crime. My sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the officer's and the deceased. If he was my family I would of tried to get him to stop and if not would understand why this has happened. Burning the garbage cans and starting riot's is NOT the answer. If any wrong doing was done the TRUTH will come out so please be patient and stop with the hatred. If we are not Americans United then we are nothing by ourselves...

People ride down the road

People ride down the road with flat tires all day long. Shooting out his tires would not have stopped him from running over the cops. Please, you see people riding down the road for at least a mile or two on a flat all of the time before they stop to fix it. The bottom line here is is that he broke the law and chose his own destiny by his own actions. Until people start wanting to change and get the scum out of their neighborhoods nothing will change. Apparently they like living in gov't housing and living off of the system and bringing up the next batch to be just like them. Have a little pride and pull a bible out and teach your children different for God's sake. Otherwise it may be your child's funeral one day you attend. This has got to stop but it first stops at home with the parents and community saying enough scum. Rid them out of your homes.

But Lorraine and Cparker,

But Lorraine and Cparker, it's only done behind a COMPUTER SCREEN and NAME.... Surely you each know (and most others) those who spew it this way will NEVER say it to that person or those people faces. Once individuals come to grips with this fact and have established in their heart and mind that, while reading racist post however blatant or subtle it may be, they have purposed not to allow it to effect them they can read them and move on. Mind you sometimes if you read them, you must say, Lord have mercy. People are going to say stuff regardless, it's up to you as to how you allow it to BIND you up in life.

Also Lorraine and Cparker

Also Lorraine and Cparker it's 2008 most people who are Cyber racist only can say but so much, every site regardless of where it is (even the racist sites) are monitored. If a post anywhere on any site across the US has hatred to the upmost the FEDS will be on them. This is another reason why I don't allow it to effect me. Now I will say YEARS ago I use to be caught up in the racial conversations here, but no longer it's not worth being bound up, that stuff can give you headaches, sleepless nights, anger, bitterness, put you in a I dare you meet me type mode etc. *SHRUGS* thank God for deliverance.

If we choose to break the

If we choose to break the law, law enforcement intervention is always a possibility regardless of your race, creed, or community status. Their level of response is dictated by OUR actions while thay are in the performance of these duties. Compliance with Law enforcement orders at times may very well result in the consequence of arrest and or jail time. Utilizing a motor vehicle as a weapon against them WILL result in a much stronger and in my eyes, justified response.
One digression I see in society as a whole, is that folks have forgotton that the actions that we take are our CHOICE and all choices come with some level of consequence. Good choices will reap good consequences and bad for bad.
A level of consequence is dictated by the level of good OR bad choices that we CHOOSE to make. It's all about accepting and holding yourself accountable for your actions, and in this case and given the facts thus far, it is my summation that the LEO's responded appropriately when the CHOICE was made to use a motor vehicle as a 4000 pound weapon. If you choose to put your head in a Lions cage, you nor your friends and family should be surprised, let alone outraged when he chomps it off.
