Violence continued in Augusta's Cherry Tree Crossing housing project Monday night when a deputy’s patrol car was hit with a bullet.

The incident appeared isolated, however, and police said the area has been generally quiet since Sunday when an angry crowd of as many as 200 lobbed rocks and bottles at police following the shooting of a 23-year-old fleeing drug suspect.

According to reports provided this morning, Cpl. Charles Benson was patrolling in the 1600 block of McCauley Street at 11:30 p.m. when he heard five or six gunshots. The deputy then heard a thump in the rear of his vehicle where a bullet struck the license plate, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office along with Georgia State Patrol troopers, increased their presence in the area and many police vehicles could be seen riding through the neighborhood late into Monday evening.

Sunday's angry protest came after Justin Elmore was shot in a stolen SUV after allegedly ramming a police cruiser.

He remains in critical condition today at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, law enforcement authorities said, although hospital spokeswomen deny having a record of him there.

The two deputies, Jose Rivera Ortiz and Michael Hodge, have been placed on administrative duty pending a Georgia Bureau of Investigation review of the case.

Bring The National Guard in there NOW. And Subdue the Thugs that are causing these problems. Answer gunfire with gunfire.

this is one of the main

this is one of the main reasons we left Augusta. Whenever we went downtown to First Friday or to the July 4th fireworks, it was thug central! We honestly did not feel safe. Until Augusta gets the thugs under control, it will always be a second rate city.

This headline is great! "Bullet hits patrol car;situation otherwise quiet at cherry tree" WOW! I'm glad everything's calmed down over there and they're just busting a few caps at the police now.

"The incident appeared

"The incident appeared isolated" - so are shootings so common there that this is just another ho hum incident? I agree with whomever suggested sending in the National guard; the only problem with that might be that the guard is deployed to foreign soil making certain that thugs like these have the safety to shoot at police cars. Sorry, but is way past time to make those who are causing all these problems to pay the piper. Yet, all this rioting was caused when one of their own is reported to have tried to ram a police car while the suspect was driving a stolen vehicle. Has law and order been completely abandoned in Augusta now? Whomever owns this project, whether it be the city or some absentee owner, needs to begin sending out 30 day notices now that the place is being closed and residents must move. It is apparent that the residents as a whole have abandoned trying to keep the place orderly and law abiding so it's time to shut it down. Sunday's reaction was proof positive that thugs are welcome there and sheltered from police activity.

This is why I left Augusta

This is why I left Augusta also. It is a horrible place for kids and grand kids. They need to shut down all projects, make them get jobs. No morals,no respect, what you can give me Thugs.

concerned parent and it's TYPICAL for you to say what you said behind your computer and screen name. There is TRASH all over Augusta even in your neighborhood, and friends you know and other family members. Trash everywhere even in my neighborhood.

We don't need the National

We don't need the National Guard here, RCPD can handle this. Having the Guard here will create an even nastier opinion of Augusta as a whole. Iff the locals will stop acting like idiots and let the police do their jobs, things will settle down and get back to normal.

All across America it's

All across America it's always the people who live in low income housing that get these types of post, some of ya'll will say and post anything behind your computers and screen name. Nine times out of ten none of you will say it to their faces, or in an open forum or hold a news conference to say just that. And, you are limited to what you can say online anyway as derogatory comments are deleted surely if a post had a HINT or NOTION that somebody wants to hurt or kill someone the Feds will be up on your screen name before you know it.

concerned parent I take major offense to your rude comment. I have lived in Richmond County all my life and I AM NOT TRASH. I'm guessing you live in wonderful Columbia County where everything is perfect. You couldn't pay me enough to live there. It's way over rated!!

Not all people hide behind

Not all people hide behind their screen names, but for the ones that do, maybe it's because of the repercussions that could occur by these thugs. Gee, you know what that sounds like? Oh, I know, Muslims protesting someone making a cartoon showing Muslims to be violent but doing what? PERFORMING VIOLENCE. Sell crazy some place else, Jackfruit. It's not a secret that the most DANGEROUS places in this country are in the inner cities.

Violence and danger is

Violence and danger is everywhere and yes most hide behind their computers and screen names, why don't you SOUND THE ALARM and hold a news conference, tell them who you are, your screen name and speak the exact words you say here, would you do it, NO. Violence is in Burke County, Columbia County, Alexandria VA, Missouri, Kentucky rural areas, Mississippi delta etc, it's not solely in the inner city.

dude....i agree.....they do

dude....i agree.....they do need a little more time at the firing range......then the thug would be 6 ft under now instead of using up our tax dollars in the hospital.....they need to be able to make the 'one shot stop'.....one shot and they are stopped dead

Again Voilence and Danger is

Again Voilence and Danger is not solely in the inner city and you still sound like a typical high minded black person that thinks they are better than other black people when in the end you still black Signal and in some eyes an N lose your mind from those types of prideful thoughts, stop hating black people so much. After awhile God is going to start sweeping around your door.

IMO we will continue to have these types of problems as long as there are people who defend the lawless elements. Like they say "if you are not part of the solution, you must be part of the problem," and it is easy to see which posters are which!
