Thomson investigator suspended in Taser incident

  • Follow Latest News

A Thomson City Police investigator has been suspended with pay while city officials investigate an off-duty incident where the officer used his Taser.

Lt. Scott Whittle was working as a security officer for an event in early November, when the incident – which was videotaped – occurred. In the video, the investigator is shown laughing with a group of young people, when a young man asked to be shot with the officer’s city-issued Taser. The man was given a small jolt with the weapon, and fell to the ground laughing and celebrating with the crowd.

Thomson Police Chief John Hathaway said Lt. Whittle was suspended with pay on Wednesday, shortly after Chief Hathaway was shown the video by an Augusta television station. City Attorney Jimmy Plunkett is leading the investigation into the incident, according to Thomson City Administrator Don Powers. The video was posted on the Internet site Facebook, but it has since been taken down.

It sounds like inmature

It sounds like inmature horseplay to me! I'm a cop, I have a taser and I am cool. Let me show you how it feels to get zapped. If it turns out to be what it sounds like, this guy has no business being a deputy, much less an investigator. He is a liablity. What next. I have a gun, let me shoot you in the leg to show you what it feels like then we'll all roll around and laugh about it?

Why are there constantly

Why are there constantly problems and incidents with "off duty" officers?

Are they using tax payer furnished equipment and training for extra cash?

Two things, one, if the guy

Two things, one, if the guy is a former GBI agent he is probably a looser. Most GBI agents who are worth a darn don't leave for small town departments. Second, most police officers are much smarter than an FBI agent.

Good grief. Much ado about

Good grief. Much ado about nothing, considering what other things should be addressed in this area.

I think the person

I think the person responsible for contacting the news on this video needs to grow up. Lt. Whittle is a great investigator and an asset to the police force. Lt. Whittle has done many great things in this community but no one recognizes him for that. There are better things to report about instead of a tazer incident. Lt. Whittle has be punished enough; no further action should be taken against him. He should be allowed to go back to work. People really need to GROW UP!!
