Spurrier switches to Garcia for bowl game

  • Follow Latest News

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Stephen Garcia will be the starting quarterback for South Carolina in its upcoming bowl game.

Garcia is from Lutz, Fla., and coach Steve Spurrier says he's giving the bowl game to Garcia like he gave the Clemson game to Chris Smelley, who threw four interceptions in a 31-14 loss to the Tigers on Saturday.

Smelley was 22 of 47 for 212 yards and a touchdown pass to go with those four interceptions. Three of the interceptions came in the first half, and all of them led to Clemson touchdowns.

The Gamecocks finished the regular season 7-5. They are in line to play in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla., or the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta.

Spurrier should have put in

Spurrier should have put in Garcia after the 3rd Smelley pick. Like I said before spurrier will stay at usc just long enough to ruin his legacy as a college coach.

Poor Spurrier!! He just

Poor Spurrier!! He just doesn't know WHAT to do! One game it's Smelley, the next time it's Garcia. The ol'ball coach has been at Carolina long enough now that he should not be having this problem. He's in charge of the recruiting and he should at least have a better handle on the position that HE coaches! He's at his wits end and won't be there too much longer. South Carolina = Coach's Graveyard!

If Spurrier had a

If Spurrier had a quarterback, he'd be dangerous! Can Garcia stay out of trouble off the field long enough to make it to the bowl game?

The expectation needs to be

The expectation needs to be 10 wins each season. Not 6 or 7. THAT'S the problem with USC football - the fans don't demand better. They're tickled silly if they get 8 wins. I'm a USC alumn and I expect 10 next year.

You could combine Garcia and

You could combine Garcia and Smelley and still not have a quarterback that would be consistant. JMO is exactly right, South Carolina is the coaches grave yard. Did you ever notice that when Lou Holtz is talking about his past coaching career on the "Game Day" shows he never mentions South Carolina? Gee.
