SSU shooting suspect still at large

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Savannah State University police continue to search for a suspect in today’s on-campus shooting of a student.

According to Chief Thomas Trawick, the shooting occurred during an altercation between two students in the University Commons student housing facility. The shooting was reported at 11:42 a.m.

The shooting victim, who has not been identified, is undergoing emergency surgery at a local hospital.

Trawick said police have recovered a gun and searched the suspect’s dorm room.

He would not provide a description of the suspect.

The campus remains on lockdown while the search for the suspect continues.

"We have locked our doors and are keeping our students inside," said Tara Cox, a marine biologist at the university.

As of mid-afternoon, people were being allowed to leave the historically black college, but no one was allowed to come onto the campus.
