A Thomson High School student was injured and taken to an Augusta hospital following a single-vehicle crash on Neal's Mill Road near Dearing on Thursday morning.

The injured student, Rebecca Hawkins, 16, a junior, who lives near where the accident occurred, was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to Trooper Willie Ramsey of the Georgia State Patrol post in Thomson. She was listed in good condition shortly before noon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Miss Hawkins received initial medical treatment from personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services.

Miss Hawkins, driving a 1999 Ford Explorer northbound on Neal's Mill Road, was attempting to negotiate a curve when she lost control of the SUV and slammed head-on into a tree, Trooper Ramsey said. The wreck remains under investigation.

The mishap occurred shortly after 7 a.m.

The vehicle sustained extensive front-end damage.
