Harold L. Johnson died at the scene of the crash on S.C. Highway 641 about 3.5 miles north of the city of Allendale.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Mr. Johnson was traveling in the eastbound lane about 4:10 a.m. when his 1988 Cadillac went off the left side of the road and into a tree.
Although the victim was not wearing a seat belt, he was not thrown from the car.
The highway patrol said toxicology is pending and the crash remains under investigation.
