Overnight freeze watch issued

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for many area counties starting tonight and continuing until Wednesday morning.

Affected counties are Richmond, Columbia, Aiken, Lincoln, McDuffie, Burke, Lancaster, Chesterfield, McCormick, Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw, Edgefield, Saluda, Lexington, Richland, Lee, Sumter, Barnwell, Orangeburg, Calhoun, Clarendon and Bamberg.

Weather officials say temperatures could fall near the freezing mark by Wednesday morning, Columbia County Emergency Services Director Pam Tucker said in an e-mail.

These conditions could kill crops and other vegetation, Ms. Tucker warned.
