Father flees; 2-year-old son, drugs left in vehicle, police say

  • Follow Latest News

A Hephzibah father remains in jail today after leaving his 2-year-old son in his car while he ran from deputies Thursday morning.

Alfonzo Lee Merriweather, 22, of the 2900 block of Celeste Drive, is charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and deprivation of a minor and various traffic charges, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Gay.

A deputy stopped Mr. Merriweather’s vehicle on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Forrest Drive because his vehicle had no license plate. The suspect ran from the vehicle, leading deputies on a chase through several backyards before he was apprehended on Mercer Street, Lt. Gay said.

When they returned to the car, they found the suspect’s son alone inside the vehicle. Seven grams of cocaine were located in the vehicle and 10 small bags of marijuana weighting 9.4 grams were also seized.

Deputies notified the Department of Family and Child Services and the child was turned over to it’s mother, Lt. Gay said.

Georgia is behind in the time

Georgia is behind in the time and technology. I came from California and I see these cars with "Tag Applied For" written on card board when they know that have not applied for anything. Why can't these car dealers be required to provide legal temporary registration for the vehicles they are selling. Where I am from, we were given a temporary registration card that was placed in the front window of the vehicle that listed the make, model, and VIN on the registration that was issued through the dealer on a DMV form that was specifically for the car being driven. I agree with all of the other comments as well and think Child Endangerment should be added to that. How many drug deals do we hear about going bad whereas the deal ends up in gun fire. Good for the Sheriff's who stopped him and caught him because they not only took a low life off the street but saved that child's life.

if you were going to have

if you were going to have drugs would you not make sure that you had a tag and no other defects with the car--that is the way that most of them are caught--dumb, dump--what can you say.

AC, you should double check

AC, you should double check your grammar/spelling. "the child was turned over to it's mother"...the correct spelling should be "its"...and why not say "his", we already knew the child was his son?

So here we have a person

So here we have a person trying to be a father to his child. He had drugs in his possession with his kid in the car. People consume drugs in front of their kids daily. Just because most of the drugs come from CVS don't make it right. Because of the drug war, and the lack of safe access to legalized drugs, he's in jail and a kid loses his father. Stop the madness. Legalize all, legalize now.
