Aiken authorities are investigating the death of a 42-year-old woman who they say was accidentally struck this afternoon by a vehicle driven by her 13-year-old son.

Paula Phillips, of 229 East Pine Log Road, was pronounced dead at her home at about 4:15 p.m., according to a news release from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Mr. Carlton stated that Mrs. Phillips was struck by her own sports utility vehicle as her son attempted to move it forward to allow him and some friends to play basketball in the driveway.

The release states that Mrs. Phillips was guiding her son as he drove, and the son accidently stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to surge forward into Mrs. Phillips, pushing her under the vehicle.

"There is no evidence of malicious intent, rather Mrs. Phillips appears to be the victim of a tragic event," Mr. Carlton said.

The case is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Aiken County Sheriff's Office, and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. It marks the 29th fatal collision in Aiken County this year.

That is the nastiest and

That is the nastiest and coldest thing I have seen in a long time. My heart breaks for this family over this tragic accident. I think the least you could do, PTHS, is to apologize to this family and MEAN it. If you don't, I hope this family will be able to forget that you were so cold to them when they are hurting so badly. God will comfort them and help heal their woulds- even the ones you have inflicted upon them. They are in my thoughts and prayers.

pths, even I'm not that

pths, even I'm not that tacky. I'm sorry the mother made the mistakes that led to this tragedy. All of us have let out children move the car as soon as they could see over the dash and hit the accelerator and brake, but not all of us stood in front of the car. Imagine how the boy will feel for years to come...not a joking matter. And PTHS, you have to read all of those holier then thou comments. (I see some even hated your two word comment too much to leave it up)

My heartfelt prayers goes out

My heartfelt prayers goes out to that young boy and his family. God know best and he makes no mistakes. Things just happen, a lot of times without thinking twice until it's too late.

Just sad for his soul and the family. He will have to live with this for the rest of his life.
Peace be with him.

I'll just say I'm glad I

I'll just say I'm glad I missed pths comment. I just lost a friend (cop) who was run over by a car and left behind so many friends and loved ones. NOT a good time to hear negative comments...from STUPID people who must not understand what loss means.

Poor guy, now he has to live

Poor guy, now he has to live the rest of his life with the thought he killed his own mom. How horrible. I feel sorry for all involved. If the mother were alive I'm sure she would forgive him for this accident! Now lets try to quit passing judgement and feel for this family who is going though immortal hell. Bunch of heartless people in this community *shakes head*
