Georgia sued over voter citizenship verification

  • Follow Latest News

ATLANTA - Voting rights groups are suing Secretary of State Karen Handel on behalf of a man who they say is the victim of an effort to deny him the right to vote.

The suit filed in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta wants to stop the state's attempts to verify the identities and citizenship of registered voters. U.S. District Judge Jack Camp has scheduled a 10 a.m. hearing Friday on a request for a temporary restraining order.

Attorneys for Jose Morales, of Cherokee County, want the suit to become a class action.

The lawsuit comes the day after the U.S. Department of Justice said the state's action to verify citizenship using Social Security numbers violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Handel issued a statement Thursday saying she is "disappointed" with the lawsuit.

Are you serious? The country

Are you serious? The country is already in a uproar about illegals being able to vote, and now Georgia is being sued because they want to make sure this guy is legal? I vote Mr. Morales go back to Mexico or wherever he came from.

What true American citizen

What true American citizen would be against having strict voter verification? I, for one, prefer that anyone voting in an American election be just that - American!

I say register to vote with a fingerprint. Then use the modern biometrics on the voting machines. We would eliminate voter fraud and catch criminals at the same time!

I would like to publish the name of the attorney that has the nerve to encourage such a wasteful lawsuit. And they wonder why the court systems are so screwed up. I would like for everyone to have to pass an IQ test to vote but that will never happen.

I am betting this guy is an illegal alien. They are trying to pave the way for illegals to vote if this action succeeds in federal court. MO uses social security numbers to cross reference voters info.

How ridiculous that a legal

How ridiculous that a legal citizen would even consider such a suit, so what does that tell you about his status? And exactly where does a person like this get the money that is required in filing such a suit? A group of voters should find themselves a REAL attorney who has America's interest at heart and a countersuit against Mr, Morales because he is attempting to interfere with the rights of legal citizens to vote in this country. We've learned at least one lesson through this economic fiasco and that is that congress for the most parts cares not one bit about their constituents, in particular Georgia's two senators whose "wisdom" far outweighed the wishes of the very people who sent them to Washington. If this ONE judge should issue an injunction against the election thingk what chaos will be created. It would be VERY interesting to know what group is pushing this - I can guarantee that Mr Morales is a puppet for some group and is not doing this of his own volition. Why SHOULDN'T Georgia and any OTHER state which has a doubt about the legal status of any registered voter NOT be able to ask Social Security for verification?

In the Atlanta Journal it

In the Atlanta Journal it stated that he became a citizen in Nov 2007--if so them why not just produce the paperwork like other people in article said they have done? Something is not right about this case. A waste of time and momey. I will bet he is not a citizen. Seems every state is going to have this problem with this election.

Why would anyone have a problem with someone verifying the identity of a voter?? Isn't that like obstruction of justice??? How do you catch voter fraud??? by verifying the identity and status of the voters..... or else people would cast a vote for every dead person in the country!!!!!! Only a criminal or an idiot would object to verification!!!
